Ben's hand trembled as he picked up the phone. He raised his eyes desperately, seeking support, which he got from his lover, who smiled sympathetically, nodded encouragingly.
Ben smiled waveringly back and dialed his mother's number.
It rang and Ben ordered his heart to slow down. It rang again and Ben's heart continued thundering.
After what seemed like an eternity of rings, but was really only three more, his mom picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hey, mom." Ben paused, reminded himself to breathe, then continued. "I, um, have something to tell you, okay?"
"Uh, okay?" She sounded puzzled.
"Right, well." Breathe, Ben, breathe. "See, mom, I've met someone." Ignore her gasp of
excitement. "We're getting married."
"Ben! is this true? Who is she?"
"Um, that's just it, mom. Um... you see... She's a he. I'm gay."
Click. A dial tone. And Ben's fiancée, Jeff, consoles him, quietly whispering that she'll come around.
