Lord John Marbury (Roger Rees), a friend of the President's (and a royal pain in Leo's neck), is appointed Britain's ambassador to the U.S.; Toby and Sam wrangle over an address the President is to give to an environmental group; Leo tries (with no success) to get the President interested in a missile-defense system; and C.J. is enlisted to ask a controversial comedian (Rocky Carroll), to decline an invitation to perform at a dinner the President is to attend.

Leo (John Spencer) tries to convince an unenthusiastic President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) about the merits of an expensive and errant missile defense system while the chief executive ponders the political benefits of chiding hard-core environmentalists over the actions of eco-terrorists when he addresses their convention. Meanwhile, Bartlet endures the formalities of accepting the appointments of a range of foreign ambassadors but he enjoys one in particular -- the presentation of the charming Lord John Marbury (Roger Rees) who returns as Great Britain's new U.S.ambassador. In addition, C.J. (Allison Janney) treads lightly when she is dispatched to New York to dissuade a comedian, Corey Sykes (Rocky Carroll), who once uttered a well-publicized but offensive joke in the President's presence from performing at the annual Will Rogers dinner.

The New York Women in Communications, Inc. (NYWICI) has a new video clip to add to its PR package, just in time for the announcement of its 2001 honorees: NBC's hit White House drama The West Wing. In Wednesday night's episode, White House press secretary C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney) mentions to communications director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) that she'll be flying up to New York to receive a Matrix Award, NYWICI's annual award for "women who changed the world" in advertising, broadcasting, PR and publishing.

The organizers of the event had no clue the West Wing plug was coming, but they would gladly hand C.J. a Matrix award.
