Steve Roper's Off-Trail High Route

Ever since I first set foot in the Sierras I thought it would be a likely place to let my feet  wander freely across basin and mountain pass. You are so often above tree line on Sierra trails, such as the Bishop Pass Trail here at 12,000 feet, that it seems so easy to head off trail; I mostly hesitated for fear of getting lost.  Steve Roper's guide to the route, the sophistication of today's GPS's and a couple summers of John Muir Trail walking gave me the confidence to finally head off-trail for my 2001 visit to the "Range of Light" - the High Sierras.
