TRANSFORMER CONSULTANT 1996- Present

- Consultation contacts with major utilities in North America such as Pennsylvania Power and Light, New Jersey Public Service, Velco/NYPA, Manitoba Hydro, Transalta, Churchill Falls, Alberta Power, Saskatchewan Power, Centralia Washington, Veridian, Winnipeg Hydro, Nepean Hydro, Poudre Valley and New Brunswick Power.

- Consultation contracts with major transformer manufacturers in North and South America such as ABB, GE-Prolec, Siemens, Ferranti Packard, VATech, Fuji, PowerTran, Trench, Caivet, Voltran, Northern Transformers, Tadeo Czerweny, and North American Transformers. I provided many designs up to 230 kV and 60 MVA to manufacturers in Canada, USA, Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina. I also provided the design for two 850 MVA, 230 kV phaseshifting transformers. I was involved in many projects effecting all parts of the transformer operation including, design, manufacturing, quality assurance, testing methods and field or test failure analysis.

- Consultation contacts with major industrial users and insurance companies in North America such as Dow Chemicals in Houston, Dupont in Virginia, SGL Carbon, Slater Steel, Co-Steel, SKW, Whitby Hydro, AESC, Royal Sun Alliance and GCAN.

ASEA BROWN BOVERI, Guelph, Ontario 1990 - 1995


- Plant/Product Manager - Directed 300 people in the engineering and manufacturing functions in the customised design and production of transformers with ratings 3 to 1000 MVA and voltages up to 765 kv. All types of transformers were manufactured and repaired, including autotransformers, regulating, generator, rectifier, furnace, convertor and phase shifting. The plant also made EHV shunt, series and DC smoothing reactors.

- Engineering Manager - I was responsible for directing 70 technical people involved in the design and engineering of power transformers at the Guelph facility. Transformers were designed to a combination of GE, Westinghouse and ABB standards. The sizes varied from 3-1000 MVA and voltages up to 765 kV. The GE technology involved mainly layer type windings while the Westinghouse and ABB technologies involved mainly disc type windings. Mainly coreform transformers were manufactured at these facilities recently but Westinghouse had also manufactured and repaired Large and EHV shellform transformers.

- Manager, Quality and Technology - Responsible for Quality Assurance, Product Development, manufacturing engineering and field service at the Guelph and Hamilton Power Transformer facilities (formerly owned by GE and Westinghouse).

WESTINGHOUSE CANADA, Hamilton, Ontario

- Engineering Manager - 1977 - 1985. Responsible for all the production electrical and mechanical design of Large Power and EHV transformers. The sizes varied from 100-750 MVA and voltages up to 765 kV. I was also responsible for electrical and mechanical development starting in 1979. Westinghouse manufactured and repaired disc winding coreform transformers and shellform transformers.

- Project Engineer - 1969 - 1977. Responsible for the electrical design and resolution of customer engineering and production technical issues related to large and complex customer contracts for transformers 100-750 MVA and up to 765 kv.

- Development Engineer - 1966 - 1968. I was responsible for determining new design procedures for all sizes and types of power transformers. My major assignments were to improve the short circuit force and strength calculations and the hotspot temperature calculations.
