Crown (aka Public) Land is owned by the province of Ontario or, in some cases, the federal government. It is managed by a series of departments responsible for mapping, surveying and sale of public lands.

Private Land is Crown or public land that has been purchased by individuals or organisations for private use. Originally, all the land in the province of Ontario was Crown Land.
