The Baule tribe from central Ivory Coast in West Africa is responsible for this exquisite mask, which may have been a portrait. For this the carver would  have to obtain permission from the subject, who would also have to be present when the mask was danced.
This mask is from Guatemala. The owls at the top are the birds of wisdom. The long-necked birds are Quetzal's. Their feathers were used for the Chief's headdress.

This is a design used on a fountain in Bobolini Gardens in Florence, Italy and then copied in town squares right across Europe.

This mask is from The Philippines.


Originating from Kwele, Gabon. Various tribes of Equatorial Africa use this Antelope mask to represent a mythical being who taught man how to cultivate the soil.

This mask is from the Aztec Society in Mexico. They used a lot of jade to adorn their masks and for other ornamentation. They were the reigning tribe throughout 80% of Mexico and the southern U.S.A

Looking in three directions at once, Janus represents the past, present and future. Such images are quite common in Britain and Ireland. January is  named after the doorkeeper characteristic of the Janus heads.

This is one type of demonic mask worn in mystery plays called Tsham, which were performed in Buddhist monasteries
Kwakiutl are a Northwest Native society found around Vancouver Island and the Northern coast of Washington State. The Kwakiutl were exceptional whalers.

This mask is from the Yaure Tribe of the Central Ivory Coast. It is more dramatic and less sweet that the neighbouring tribes. The zigzag border is a common feature.

Tribal Face: Olmec, Mexico - Vera Cruz area. The image is taken from the very large stone statues around Vera Cruz and areas further south.
This is found in Bali, Indonesia. A decorative festival mask. This is a traditional mask from the Pacific Northwest. It is similar to crest figures on totem poles from Skebans and Taner tribes on the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia, Canada. Natural paints were  used to decorate carved wooden objects.

The Kwakiurl Indians of the Pacific Northwest wore this mask during the sacred Tseteka winter season. It is one of the most powerful spirits. It appears mainly on Kwakiutl Totem Poles but all coastal peoples include the Thunderbird in their ancient lore and attribute various powers to this supernatural bird.
