Airedale History

The first dog I owned was as a teen - an adorable little poodle/spaniel cross named "Shandi". After her tragic meeting with a car, I immediately sought out another dog, and found a Lakeland Terrier named "Tawny" (Sagonaska's Spring Fling CD). She tolerated my efforts to show her both in conformation and in obedience. She did earn her CD (Companion Dog) degree, which is no easy feat for many Lakelands! Tawny lived a long and healthy life.

When I moved out of my parents' home, I decided I wanted a larger dog, one who was fun and trainable, and had the easy care of a wire coat. The Airedale fit the bill! I brought "Max" (Can. Ch. Robson's Apache Warrior CD) into my life in 1987. Soon after aquiring him, I discovered that my grandfather (who died young as the result of a plane crash) had owned an Airedale before he and my grandmother married. "Peggy" was her name, and she was used as a hunting companion along with my grandpa's Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. It was at the time of Max's arrival that I learned more of my grandfather's passion for dogs (I had previously heard of his love of animals as he had a pet raccoon and a pet deer!). He was a founding member of the Kawartha Kennel Club. Even more ironic is that I am born on his birthday! I sure wish I had had the chance to know him.

Max was a great dog. He finished both a conformation and an obedience title and made friends wherever he went. He sold me on Airedales, and led me to purchasing my "Peggy" (Am. Can. Ch. Ironcroft Priority Post, Am. CD, Can. CDX, TT) in 1989. Peggy is behind every Paradym Airedale. Please browse the list of Paradym Champions to view her descendants.

My first Airedale litter was born in 1991. Now, 15 years later with over 20 Champions and counting, I still have a passion for this wonderful breed.
