UNDERSTANDING CANADA'S NEW
PERSONAL INFORMATION PROTECTION ACT

In January 2001, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act ("PIPED Act") came into effect for all federally-regulated companies and organizations. This act requires new standards and practices for managing personal information in the private sector. In January 2004, either the PIPED Act or "substantially similar" provincial legislation will be extended to provincially-regulated organizations as well.

The new laws will change the way private sector and government organizations gather and handle the personal information of clients, customers and personnel. It will alter the way business is done for both profit-making and non-profit organizations, in the office and on the Internet.

Day one will give you a thorough understanding of the essentials of the PIPED Act and how the office of the Privacy Commissioner operates in enforcing it. The afternoon of day one will spotlight provincial government plans for their own private-sector privacy legislation.

Whatever you do with personal information, you need to understand what this law means to you and how to apply it in your organization.
