As you have probably guessed, I am a 47 year old academic who is proud to be called a geek! I have a variety of interests and hobbies (too many?) In addition to Stained Glass, Photography, Cooking, aviation, and Genealogy, I like to travel, do geocaching, read, program websites, and putter around the house. Some of these hobbies had been on the back burner while I completed my Ph.D and as I struggle with the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis, but I will soon get back into them.

By clicking on the links above or reading below, you can read about some of the things that I like to do.

My academic and work backgrounds are as varied as are my hobbies. I have a general Bachelor of Science (Botany/Zoology) and a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Physiological Psychology from the University of Manitoba. Subsequently, I earned a Master of Science (Psychology/Electrophysiology) from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario (where I met Wendy).

During the many years that I was in school (the first time...), I worked as a librarian's assistant, a computer programmer (in Wang BASIC!), a videographer, and a researcher (among other things). After finishing my Master's degree, I worked for over 8 years as a research technician at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (working on the physiology of the ductus arteriosus) and in 1998, I moved to a research job at the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre (working on angiogenesis and bone metastasis, using animal models of cancer, maintaining websites, etc.). The Cancer Centre is now the Juravinski Cancer Centre.

In 2004 I enrolled in the Medical Sciences Graduate Program at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences (Physiology & Pharmacology) on Sept. 23, 2009, I completed my Ph.D. I am currently studying the impact of a waste product of cancer cell metabolism that appears to have significant impact on bone turnover in cases of bone metastasis. I have learned a variety of molecular biology and cell culture techniques and have applied these to my work on bone metastasis and bone pain. Eventually, I hope to pursue the development of more effective therapies for bone metastasis and to further examine the mechanisms supporting the chronic pain that is so common in bone metastasis patients.

Parker took this photo of me the day before my solo (C-GYAO is the plane I flew that day).

Parker also took this great photo - I am in the plane at the top, not the one at the bottom. It had just crashed a few minutes before - Wendy and Parker were the only ones (other than myself up in the air) who saw the whole thing happen.

This is my instructor, Amar, and myself before a lesson.
