The
History of the Beaver Scout Program

2011 - A New Look For Beaver Scouts
(Bill Kowalchyk)
|
On November 15,
2004, Scouts Canada's youngest section (5-7 years) celebrated the 30th Anniversary of its
launch as an official program. Just as younger boys wanted to become involved in Scouting in
the early years, in Canada during the sixties, even younger boys wanted to become involved
in Cubbing. |
| It was Scouting officials in Winnipeg who, in 1971, decided
that it was time to do something for these younger boys. They began an experimental
program called Beavers for boys 5, 6 & 7 years of age. The experiment was such a
success that in 1972 it was made a country-wide, experimental program by the National
Council. Finally, on November 15, 1974, Beavers Canada was made an official program
section of Scouts Canada. |

|
Since then, the Beaver section has continued to flourish.
Other countries, too, have looked at our Beaver program and have introduced similar
programs for their younger boys. These include Tiger Cubs BSA (US), Beaver Scouts
(UK), Joey Scouts (Australia) to name a few. The program went
co-ed along with the rest of Scouts Canada in 1998!
In
2010, the program was renamed "Beaver Scouts" as part of
Scouts Canada's rebranding initiative.

Burlington has been providing the Beaver Scout program since the early experimental days,
opening our Beaver Scout section in the fall of 1973.
We
celebrate the history of "Beavering" with a brief look back at the Eager Beavers who have spent time
in our Pond over the years.
Happy
Birthday, Beavers, here's to 30 more! |
