The Superhighway Rest Stop
_
The I-15 starts in San Diego and ends at the Canadian border in Alberta; from Los Angeles to Las Vegas it makes its way through the Mojave desert. Here, roughly between the two, near the Nevada border lies the super rest stop. Situated above the highway; the rest stop takes advantage of the direct access from the ever increasing number of cars that travel this route daily. The programme is broken into short term and long term stays. For those who want to get back onto the road as quickly as possible the upper level consists of the travellors basic needs; gas station, drive thru and washrooms. The rest of the structure contains the programme for a 24hr culture with an ever refreshing population. Big box retail lines the highway, feed by a central spine that occupies the medium. The spine consists of food court, washrooms and 1km of slots. Book ending the building are a hotel on one end and an RV park on the other. Throughout the structure advertising and signage play key roles, enticing those passing through. This project was designed as a critical analysis of a rapidly becoming reality of contemporary culture.
