Horton English: habitational name from any of the various places so called. The majority, with examples in at least fourteen counties, are named from Old English horh ‘mud’, ‘slime’ or horn ‘dirt’ + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’. From his Obit. in the Thorold Post. Died in the home of J.W. Smerdon in Thorold, Ontario on the 13th of Feb. He had broke his hip three months earlier and never got out of bed again. He was proceeded by his wife Mary, to whom he lived with for 78 years. Born in Devonshire, England, he came with his bride to Canada in 1852. They had a farm in Homer, then moved to Port Robinson. Survived by Joseph Horton - Crowland, W. J. Horton - Merriton, Eli and Alfred - Humberstone, Mrs. James W Smerdon - Thorold, Mrs Mary Long - Font Hill, Mrs Frank Misne - Crowland, Mrs George Misner, Beechwood.
