The goal is Reunification with Downtown, by creating: * a safe and convenient
pedestrian and bicycle link and On their way to, or from Downtown, people could also shop and do business, in a year-round comfortable environment. Consideration may also be given to incorporating affordable housing units, designed to be protected from noise and smog. This will provide a continuous human presence. The structure could be designed to achieve minimum disruption to the existing highway and crossing road, by using adjacent land that cannot be developed, thus reducing the initial cost. It may be constructed in phases, as a chain of commercial modules embracing the pedestrian route. These will generate revenue and would make the project financially feasible. The central module could incorporate a future
station for a monorail to be developed along the highway median This pilot project, developed in public-private partnership, with all levels of government involved, would be a great example of urban intensification and sustainable growth. It could also incorporate innovative construction technologies and solar energy. The "Reunification" would bring Oakville into the spot light of the urban scene and enhance its reputation of forerunner in new urbanism, heritage preservation and environmental protection. A great example to be followed by other cities! Last
