eResearch: Ethics, Privacy & Security

ethics & law

This tutorial went online in 2006. It is a mandatory tutorial for anyone who wants to do a retrospective review using patient charts for research purposes in Hamilton Health Sciences/Faculty of Health Sciences. Once you complete the tutorial, you will get a certificate and a number. You add the number to the HHS/FHS Reserach Ethics Board application form as proof of having completed the tutorial.

Other authors of the tutorial were a lawyer with Health Law, Privacy and Ethics experience, and a Clinical Epidemiologist with an e-Research background, and experts in Research Ethics.

A technical note about the webdesign: I used the first version of the McMaster web templates and redesigned them using Dreamweaver. I modified the main McMaster homepage CSS. I programmed the login, quizz questions, and administrative login to monitor and track completion certificate numbers in Coldfusion. I tested the code on a private server before the application was uploaded to the University Technology Server.

Nearly 4,000 people have taken the tutorial since was started.

Once you finished this tutorial - takes about 15 - 20 minutes, there are Research Ethics tutorials you might want to look at:

The Panel on Research Ethics Tutorial on the Tri-Council Policy Statement. This is a tutorial on the Canadian National Research Ethics Guidelines and Policy:

The McMaster Research Ethics Tutorial. This is another tutorial I designed, programmed, and wrote content for:

There are two versions. This other version does not have a certficate or login:

We cut back on the health science modules a couple years ago to make it more about qualitative and social behavioural research
