The Green River Killer

The Green River Killer was one of America's most prolific serial killers. His exploits are, strangely enough, largely unknown outside of the western United Staes. The dates of the murders and number of victims are the subject of debate. Some still believe that he is operational today, with a slight M.O. change that has lead investigators astray...

When And Where?: Washington State (1982 - 86?) Many of the victims were abducted from the Seattle area. Some of the initial victims were found dumped in the Green River near Kent, Washington. A handful of bodies were recovered in Oregon, not far from the Washington border.

Who?: Unsolved

The Murders: Police records attribute 41 murders to the killer. Estimates are from 48+ victims. The Green River Killer induced death by means of strangulation or suffocation. This method of serial killing suggests a psychological need for the murderer to be close to his victims. Such cases are generally sexual in nature. Experts believe that the killer had an intense hatred of women. Almost all of the victims were female, involved in prostitution or were 'street people'. Age did not seem to matter. Victims ranges from their early teens up to middle age. The killer used 'dumping grounds'; places or areas where multiple bodies were found. Some victims were found long after their disappearance. Some bodies attributed to the murderer have never been located.
