Striped Hairstreak

Size - 20 to 25 mm.

On the wing - Mid June until mid August.

Range - Scattered throughout Canada's southern latitudes but primarily in southern Ontario and Quebec.

Host plants - Trees and bushes such as plum, cherry and Hawthorn.

Favourite habitat - Edges of wooded areas.

Special notes - Due to their small size and speed of flight they generally go unnoticed by the casual observer. Although they are considered a pest by farmers I am most intrigued by these little fellows. Their defense mechanism is most fascinating (see mimicry).
