Red Admiral

Size - 45 to 60 mm.

On the wing - April to September.

Range - Coast to coast.

Host plants - Stinging and Wood Nettles

Favourite habitat - Widely varied.

Special notes - This butterfly has been known to over winter. So they appear very early in the season and can be readily found until September. A striking and distinctively coloured butterfly however it's not an Admiral, as in the White Admiral, but a Thistle butterfly. Included in that group is the Painted Lady. Adults visit flowers.
