How to Sugar for Moths A.K.A. Pasting
![]()
Shhhhh!!!!!! This is
a secret recipe for attracting moths. Sugaring for moths is highly effective and affords
the observer an intimate view of the visitors to this very potent moth bait.![]()
Ingredients
Beer - 2 flat
Banana - 1 rotten and pureed
Kiwi - 1 puréed
Grape Jelly - 2 tbls -
like in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
Molasses - 1 tbls per bottle of beer
Brown Sugar - 1 tbls per bottle of beer
Rum - 1 tbls per
bottle of beer
Combine the ingredients in a glass bottle (i.e.: wide mouth mason
type) and let bake in the sun for several days. Be sure that the lid isn't screwed on
tight so gases can escape. It is now ready for consumption (by the moths.........you fool !!!!).
This is achieved by simply painting on trees, at eye level, using a paint brush. To be
honest with you I have made this with just the beer, bananas and brown sugar with good
success. I do believe that the results were somewhat better with the recipe as complete as
possible. As well, the proportions are not that critical either they are guidelines only.
So feel free to experiment with what you might have on hand. There are many other
concoctions that lepidopterist use with ingredients that include such things vinegar and
believe it or not urine. To elaborate on the later I must tell you that this was used in
the tropics to attract a certain species of butterflies that feeds on sewage. To the best
of my knowledge that won't be a required element to bait moths here in southern Ontario.![]()
