Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Size -  75 to 100 mm.

On the wing - From late spring and all summer.

Range - Southern Ontario and eastern US.

Host plants - Larvae are partial to Tulip Trees.....AKA Yellow Poplar.

Favourite habitat - Adults are partial to woodland areas and can frequently be found mudpuddling.

Special notes - The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is a strikingly beautiful butterfly. Unlike the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail the female is dimorphic. Some of the females take on a black form which mimics the Pipevine Swallowtail. The ratio of females, that take on the black mimic form, is proportional to the number of Pipevines in the area. They can be seen beginning late spring and throughout the summer.
