treeline bar

Size - 60 to 90 mm.

On the wing - July and August.

Range - B.C. to Nova Scotia.

Host plants - Violets.

Favourite habitat - Open fields.

Special notes - Interestingly, after violets have died off, Fritillaries have been observed depositing their eggs on the ground. Do the adults recognize where violets will bloom again to provide the larval food source? Smell or taste would appear to be the stimuli here for choosing where to lay the eggs of the next generation.
