American Lady
![]()
Size - 40 to 55 mm.
On the wing - May to September.
Range - Eastern Saskatchewan to Newfoundland but primarily southern Ontario and Quebec.
Host plants - Asters.
Favourite habitat - Wide variety of open habitats.
Special notes - This is another one of those butterflies that is going to take some time to learn to identify. The Painted lady is virtually identical. However there are several distinct features on the American Lady. Primarily the two large eye spots at the outer margin of the underside of the hind wing. On the upper side of the hind wing the dark spots have a blue center. This is where side by side comparisons come in handy but rarely presents itself in the field.
