On September 5th a celebration was held in
Woodview, at her home post office which is located
in the Woodview General Store! Several PNLP students, literacy colleagues,
friends and family were on hand. The Area Manager for Canada Post made the
presentation of a cheque for $500 and a beautiful certificate. Pat gave a short
speech of thanks that also spoke to the impact of literacy on the lives of students,
their families and communities.

The Educator Awards honour educators, tutors, and advocates who have
demonstrated a commitment to adult literacy or adult ESL/FSL training.
Each year Canada Post recognizes an educator working in either English
or French for each province. Pat won for Ontario this year in the English category.

“Drumming Up A Storm” a big success!

We sure drummed up a storm at St. Paul’s Church on June 21st!
The show was a way of celebrating National Aboriginal Day and
raising funds for our activities at PNLP.

This was our first annual All Aboriginal Musical Variety Show
Our almost sold out show, “Drumming Up A Storm”, had seven different performances by Native musicians. Featured guest artists, Rukanas, a five-member ensemble that performs the music of Andes Mountains, brought the house down during both their sets. Other performers included Don Ense (folk), Peggy Day and
Dave Mowat (country and blues) Sarah DeCarlo and Nadya Kwandibens (original blues and pop), Wishkiigomang (women’s hand drumming) and Brenda MacIntyre (reggae and traditional). Host for the evening was Drew Hayden Taylor, well known Native author and playwright.

Baagwating Community Association (Mississaugas of Scugog First Nation) was our sponsor and many local businesses and individuals donated prizes or money for tickets so others could attend.

Our fundraising goal was $2200 and we raised over $2400! It was such a huge success that we’re going to do it again next year on National Aboriginal Day!

Keep your calendars clear for our next “Drumming Up A Storm” on June 21st, 2008!
