Why the “Company of Lost Souls”?

So glad you asked.  We decided on the name “Company of Lost Souls” for a couple of reasons.

First, during the Renaissance, actors were considered to have gone against the teachings of the Church simply by becoming involved in theatre.  When they died, they were not allowed to be buried on hallowed ground. The Church believed that their souls were condemned to Hell for no other reason than they were actors. Now, while we know some people today whose opinion of actors isn’t much different, it does make those who came before us ‘lost souls’.

Secondly, if those of us in the company are any indication, once you get involved in theatre, you’re hooked.  It ends up becoming a huge part not only of your life, but of who you are. In a sense, you lose your soul to it.

And lastly, after all the bull s**t is said and done, we thought it was a really cool name.  Anyone in the company can quite honestly say that they’re “in the company of lost souls”.  We thought that was kinda nifty.
