In addition, there is a mysterious thunder-like sound that makes intermittent appearances throughout this recording. It is clearly intentional and not part of the recording environment. It is unknown who contributed this element to the recording and what “instrument” was used to produce this sound. It may be some sort of distortion produced by the amplification system used by John Cale and Tony Conrad. Or possibly the amplified sound of La Monte’s aquarium motor or a refridgerator or other source generating a constant hum. Appears to be pitched considerably lower than the 60 Hz electrical hum normally present.
Recording source unknown. The first part appeared on the 4-CD “Purple Set”, with a short edit around the 15:50 minute mark.
A recording of what appears to be another separate section, appears on a 1995 Japanese vinyl LP bootleg simply entitled “The Theatre of Eternal Music” and is listed simply as “The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys”. Same thunder-like sound is present, yet less prominent and this section is generally less intense than the section from the Purple Set. Likely an earlier section of the same performance.
Likely recorded in NYC. La Monte Young states that this is a better representation than “day of niagra” of what was typical of the work being performed during this time period. |
