“Early Tuesday Morning Blues” (1964)
Performed by The Theatre of Eternal Music La Monte Young : Sopranino Saxophone John Cale : Viola Marian Zazeela : Voice
Recording source unknown. Appeared on an unauthorized 4-CD “Purple Set”.
This piece was also aired during the October 21, 1984 WKCR (89.9 FM) 24 Hour La Monte Young Retrospective radio broadcast in celebration of La Monte Young’s 49th birthday. The piece was specifically introduced by name by the program host.
The piece also has been pitch corrected to the drone note of G. In an interview for the Just Intonation Network, Volume 5, Issue 4 - La Monte Young states … And on the IV Chord (one of the dream chords), there’s one cut we did called Early Tuesday Morning Blues, in which I’m just playing, in this key of G Dorian, C, G, Bb, C. Those are the only notes, and I play them over all the octaves of the sopranino saxophone, extremely fast.
Recorded sometime shortly after the departure of Angus MacLise on February 18, 1964 and before La Monte Young abandoned the saxophone after June 1964. Also likely prior to April 1964 when they recorded “Pre-Tortoise Dream Music”. March 1964 is very likely to be the correct month and year of the recording. Personnel is according to La Monte Young’s essay on The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys dated July 21, 2000.
This recording appears to be a complete version with a definite beginning and ending as opposed to an excerpt. |
