UW Mathie History

The following is a very brief history of the Faculty of Mathematics. The information for this was found on the Faculty of Mathematics webpage. Visit the page for a more thorough history!
University of Waterloo started out as part of Waterloo College, a Lutheran liberal arts college affiliated with Western.

In 1956 Ralph Stanton (from University of Toronto) was recruited to head a Department of Mathematics.

In 1957 the Faculties of Engineering and Science, and the Department of Mathematics moved down the street to what is the current location of the University of Waterloo.

In 1959 the university charter was received and the associate faculties became the University of Waterloo.

In 1960 the Faculty of Arts was established. Math was the largest department in Arts.

Ralph Stanton's dream and goal was to make Mathematics a separate Faculty. In his view, Math belonged neither in Arts or Science; it was a distinct discipline, and had grown sufficiently to become a faculty on its own. On January 1st, 1967 UW became the first university in North America to have a separate Faculty for Mathematics.

In 1968 the Math and Computer Building officially opened. The Pink Tie became the symbol for the Math Faculty.

The Math Building

The Math building is very large and made of concrete. There are those who believe that it could be a fortress.
Could this have been the original design for the math building?

The 6th Floor of the Math Building is a maze. Many get lost and never return.
