My Bowling Page

My parents met in a bowling alley. How's that for a start? It was obvious that their children would eventually end up bowling themselves...it was in our blood! I started 5 Pin bowling as a Pee Wee in 1982. From that point on, every Saturday morning for 13 years, I was bowling.

Pee Wees (at the time) was the first section of the YBC (Youth Bowling Council). Pee Wees are aged 5-7, Bantams are aged 8-10, Juniors are aged 11-13, and Seniors are 14-18. I was a Pee Wee from 1982-1985. In September 1985 I started Bantams. In 1986 they changed the age requirements a little bit and I only ended up in Bantams for two years. In September 1987 I moved to Juniors. In September 1990 I moved to Seniors and was a part of Seniors until 1995 when I graduated from YBC. Also, from 1993-1998 I helped coach the Pee Wees (ie I taught them how to bowl).

Seniors was my favourite section because after 10 years of bowling I had gotten to be pretty good! I consistently had the second or third highest average for the ladies in our league and I was bowling on the 4 Steps to Stardom team for four out of my five years there. Our team went to the Provincials twice!

4 Steps to Stardom is a National 5-Pin YBC tournament.
It has 4 Steps: the house round, the zone round, the provincial round, and finally the nationals.

I was also able to earn the YBC Senior Award of Excellence which is given based on your performance for the year.

Over the years of bowling I earned many crests and trophies. Most of the trophies are long gone. They were given to charity to be reused for tournaments or prizes for underprivileged children.

After I graduated from Seniors I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I started working at the bowling center to keep in touch with bowling while I decided. I soon discovered that working in a bowling center and watching others bowl makes you want to start bowling again!

I joined the Young Adults Bowlers Association (YABA) which is run in bowling leagues across Canada. They have bi-monthly tournaments around Ontario where participants bowl for money. I was a member of YABA leagues at Towne Bowl, Waterloo Lanes, and Dickson Bowl. I also joined a couple of other leagues over the years including the Stampede league at Towne Bowl, the Thursday night league at Victoria Bowl, and Tuesday nights at Dickson Bowl. I was also able to take part in The Open (which is similar to the YBC 4 Steps to Stardom) and ended up on a team that went to the provincial level.

This picture of my bowling buddies was taken at my wedding in September 2005.

Currently, I still bowl in YABA at Dickson bowl in a Tuesday night league. I had to take off the 2007-2008 season to have some surgery but I am now back bowling in the league and trying to get my game back!
Hopefully, I'll be able to bowl long enough to get my elusive 400 game!
