LAKE FAMILY OF LINCOLNSHIRE
	Lake Family Currently there are at least three distinct ancestral lines of the Lake family in Lincolnshire, possibly more. In the mid-18th century, my Lake family was located in West Keal, Lincolnshire. All records I have found for my third great-grandfather, Benjamin Lake indicate he was born in West Keal in 1788. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a parish record for his baptism to confirm this. Although the information from the parish records would seem to indicate William & Sarah Lake are Benjamin's parents, this is only speculation. I have not been able to find anything to confirm this relationship. During the period of 1783-1792, the British government levied yet another tax upon the people. If a family wanted to have their child's baptism recorded in the parish register a tax had to be paid for the record to be entered, although the ceremony itself was still performed regardless of the tax.  This was also true for burials. Marriages were recorded without the tax as this was a legal requirement. So, if your family were poor tenant farmers as mine were, it is likely they may not have had the money to pay to have these entries recorded in the parish register. I think William & Sarah are Benjamin Lake's parents. They had the money to pay the tax at the time Mary was baptized in 1784, as this is recorded. However, by 1788, there is no record of baptism for Benjamin, therefore leading me to believe his parents didn't have the money, and they were too proud to have the entry put in the register for free with the words "pauper" beside their name. William Lake was married to Sarah BOROMAN in December, 1783. Their children were: Mary Lake (1784 - ?) Benjamin Lake* (1788 - ?) Benjamin was married to Eleanor ROBSON in 1823. They had two children: William John* (1827-1898) John Lake was married to Naomi DOWSE in 1858 in Mablethorpe.  They lived in Swineshead and Wigtoft Fen.  John and Naomi had eight children: Ellen Eleanor was married to George WOOLLEY. Benjamin was married to Margaret QUINCEY. Naomi was married to John ROBINSON. John William had two wives: Lettica ? & Mary Anne ? Eliza was married to [?] CHALLONER. Elizabeth was married toThomas Smith ROBINSON. Herbert*(1875-1957 ) Herbert Lake was married to Fanny CRAWFORD in 1899 in Boston, Lincolnshire. In 1926 Herbert and Fanny immigrated to Canada with 8 of their children. They settled in Toronto, Ontario before eventually moving to London, Ontario. The family is very well known in the district, and best wishes are extended to them. Herbert and Fanny had thirteen children: Dorothy Louisa Crawford never married. She died at the age of 20. Frank Sydney Lake Crawford was married to Hilda Hoggart. They had 6 children. Horace Victor was married to Lucy ROBSON. They had no children. Elsie May was married to Leonard COULSON. They had 7 children. Muriel Maud was married to Sidney Harold DIXON. They had one child. Herbert Ronald never married. Ralph Harold was married to Clara May MATTHEWS. They had two children. John Reginald, known as Jack. He was married twice; first to Marjorie JAMIESON with whom he had 7 children. His second wife was Ina COOPER. Kathleen Irene was married to Thomas William FAIRBAIRN. They had 6 children. Nora Evylin was married to Alvin John SHANNON. They had 5 children. Thomas Frederick Davy was married to Gwendolyn Mary BACHELOR. They had 3 children. Private Leslie Gerald Lake never married. While serving in the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps during World War II, he died defending the allies against the Germans in Italy in 1944. Raymond Stanley Lake* was married to Lenora Elva RYCKMAN. They had 6 children. Top of Page
