Charles and ElspetEarly Life in ScotlandCharles was born ca. 1807, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The 1841 census of Scotland lists his occupation as blacksmith. Elspet (Elizabeth, Elsie) was born ca. 1808, also in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The Register of Proclamations of Banns of Marriages for the Parish of Premnay, states that Charles Milne of the Parish of Leslie & Elspet Ross of the Parish of Premnay were married December 13, 1831. The names in the margin of the register were mistakenly noted as Milne and Brown. A Short Life Together in WentworthCharles and Elspet left Duncanston, Leslie Parish for Canada West in 1844 according to information given by one of their sons on the 1901 census. They possibly lived in Hamilton for a time and in 1848 they purchased land at Concession 6, Lot 16 of the Township of Flamborough West. The parents and a growing family are listed in the 1851 census for West Flamborough. By 1861, Elspet appeared in the census as Mrs. Milne, widow. The exact date of death and site of burial for Charles have not yet been determined. Elspet married George Bradt ca 1876. She died in Hamilton on April 30, 1897. |
