What to look for in a breeder
"We are interested in getting a Tibetan Terrier but have no idea of what questions to ask or what to look for in a breeder. Also are there any good books on the Tibetan Terrier?"
Response
Most TT breeders are responsible breeders who have worked hard to maintain the quality and genetic integrety of this wonderful breed of dog. They will want to discuss several things with you, and may be perceived to be giving you a hard time to qualify for a puppy. They do this to make sure that this is right decision for you, not to be taken lightly. They will want you to know as much as possible about the breed in order for you to make an informed decision.
They will provide you with copies of certificates for eyes and hips for both parents. They will have a contract with stringent conditions intended for the protection of the dog. This probably will include the provision of a health guarantee, neuter/spay conditions, possibly conditions for you to test eyes and hips at a certain age. They will insist that the dog goes back to them if for whatever reason, at which ever age some unpredictable situation warrants it. (this essentially says that the breeder is accepting a life time responsibility for this dog - the main concern is knowing in whose hands they end up).
If these conditions are not present, especially the requirement of a signed contract, health guarantee and copies of OFA (hips) and CERF (eye) certificates for the parents....be wary! You might also want to ask them for a few references of homes where previous puppies have been placed. Call these people and find out if the whole experience was enjoyable, and if the breeder was readily available to help out with advice whenever needed.
There is very little in the way of published information on this breed. We have a page at our WWW site with recommended publications. The 'Tibetan Terrier Book' by Jane Reif is a very good book on the breed. Anyone considering getting a TT should have this book. Her "Reflections on the Tibetan Terrier" is also very good. Both must be ordered directly from the Author.
Good luck in your search.
