Welcome to our 2010 catalogue of winter-hardy succulent perennial plants. We grow over 400 varieties of sempervivums, jovibarbas, rosularias, orostachys (sometimes classed with sedums), true sedums and some others which belong in the same setting. All prefer a well drained, gritty soil in a sunny position, although we have found a baking hot position can stunt growth and looks, so some shade can be beneficial. Being succulent, frequent watering is not required.

SEMPERVIVUMS are commonly known as "hens and chicks". There are about 60 species, mostly native to the mountainous areas of Europe. From these over 3,500 named varieties have been developed. They come in colours ranging from bright yellow, through shades of green, gray, pink, purple, red, orange, brown to almost black. The leaves can be dull, glossy, or covered with down or longer 'hairs'. The leaf edges and/or tips of some are covered in silvery hairs forming a "cobweb" over their surface. Add to this the variation of the leaf shape - short or long, round or tapering, flat or upwards, thin or thick, so that these endless combinations make growing sempervivums so interesting to enthusiasts. These evergreen plants look their best in spring or early summer, but their colours can change throughout the year. In this catalogue we are unable to describe the annual changes each one goes through, but most take effect in late fall and early spring. Each year a cluster of offsets ("chicks) forms around the parent rosette. Once the offsets have formed their own roots they can be detached and grown separately. After 2,3 or more years the parent rosette will begin to flower - pink, purple, yellow, or rarely white, and then dies after setting the almost invisible seeds. We have grouped them this year by their colour at the best time of the year for that variety, and also give an indicator of size: small - meaning a mature rosette is no bigger than a loonie, large - greater than the diameter of a pop can, and medium being somewhere between these two. Soil, weather and growing conditions can greatly affect this.

JOVIBARBAS. There are only five species, (but many hybrids) of jovibarbas, native to the same places as sempervivums and similar looking. Four of them make offsets, sometimes called 'rollers' as they can roll away from the parent plant and root. The other species, J. heuffelii does not make offsets. Instead the main stem splits into two or more rosettes, which have to be cut out to get additional plants, making propagation difficult. The heuffeliis have very colourful varieties, and we hope to have a larger selection next year.

ROSULARIAS come from Turkey, Iran, and Northern India. They have attractive ivory-coloured flowers.

OROSTACHYS are "different" (see descriptions). They grow in such places as the Gobi desert, Siberia, Mongolia and northern Japanese islands. Few hybrids exist.

SEDUMS are of the same plant family (Crassulaceae) as the other plants described above. Some of ours can also be found in garden centers. We do not grow the fast growing ones which can be become invasive and should be used only for ground cover. We have tried to indicate their heights, with small, medium or large symbols (S M L)

PRICES AND ORDERING

Except where indicated, all our plants are C$2.50 each. This includes all applicable taxes. See order form for shipping and handling costs. For this you will receive a minimum of 3 rosettes of the slowest growing varieties, (more for the others) consisting of both mature and younger plants. They travel best bare-root and we like to dry them out a bit first. If necessary, most can survive for months (even with no soil,) in a cool well-lit place. For the sedums and other succulents planting should be done as soon as possible.

A great way to start is to order a collection. For sempervivums and jovibarbas, we can send a mix of 12 named varieties of either all large, all medium, all small, or a mix of all 3 sizes for just $C25 plus shipping. An even better idea is to order 'lost label' types. These are 15 for $C25 and all different. It helps to keep prices low if we avoid payment by credit cards, so cheques or money orders only, please (made payable to Cavendish Perennials).

We look forward to receiving your order.
