Origin of the Name Zoschke
The "schke" is a Slavic suffix, typical for Pommern (Prussia) The area was once populated by Wendish tribes.
The "ke" suffix is a Slavic diminutive, like "little something" in German.
According to the information passed down from Karl Henry Zoschke the family originally came from Austria-Hungary.
According to available ships records on April 8, 1890,
my Great great grandparents Charles (Karl Heinrich) Zoschke and Henrietta (Trecia) Willette Mielke* (Milcke) together with their daughter Bertha, departed from Hamburg Germany (Prussia) on the ship Empress bound for Liverpool England. Prior to leaving Prussia they lived in German Karstnitz Kreis Stolp Pommern. In Liverpool for some unknown reason they transferred to the steamship S.S. Sardinian. They arrived at the port of Quebec City on Aril 29, 1890 bound for Toronto Ontario. Eventually they settled in the Penetanquishene area and lived for a time with their son Karl Henry and his wife Augusta. On December 21st 1894, Charles Zoschke became a naturalized Canadian when he signed an Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria in Penetaquishene Ontario. (Documents concerning ships manifest obtained through Ancestry.ca).
Their sons, Karl Henry my great grandfather , Franz (Frank) and Frederick together with Carolena entered Canada between 1884 and 1891 and settled in the Penetanquishene Ontario area. Johann August Zoschke, their eldest son remained in Prussia and later moved to Berlin. Their religion was Lutheran.
Henrietta was born Sept. 5, 1825 d Oct. 9, 1910, (reference, Ontario Census 1901 County of Simcoe division of Penetanguishene, page 358, number 027984).
Charles according to the 1891 Census of Ontario was 65 yrs. old, thus making his birth date to be abt. 1825-1826. At that time Charles and Henrietta lived with Karl Henry their son and his wife Augusta. (reference Census Simcoe East, District 15, Page 58, family #253). Charles did not appear on the 1901 census. Since he signed the Oath of Allegiance in 1894, I assume that he died between 1894 and 1901. According to Gertrude Neilon nee Zoschke daughter of Frank Zoschke and Anna Cuff, her grandparents Charles and Henrietta were buried in the St. James on-the-line Garrison Church Cemetery near Penetanguishene Ontario. I have since been in contact with Don Charlebois, Chairman of St James on-the-Lines cemetery. He states,"I have checked the St James on-the-Lines Cemetery records which I have put together from all the records available and I have not found any internment's under the name of Zoschke or any variation thereof."
* Birth records of Johann August Hermann Zoschke supplied by Georg Nitzke indicated that his mother's maiden name was "Mielke". It may be noted that during the baptizm of Johann and Karl there were two of Henriette's relatives, Caroline Mielke who was married to Johann Papenfuss and Johann Ferdinand Mielke. At this time I am not sure how they were related.
