Used for evaluation and training. See X-craft. (On names/numbers of X-Craft, X-1 and X-2 were not used: X-1 had been a giant submarine with twin turrets and scrapped for being impractical - and not politically sound; X-2 had been a captured enemy vessel. The original idea for X-Craft came from a First World War submariner, Commander Varley, and apparently X-3 was laid down as early as 1939.

Tirpitz raid, Kå Fjord, Norway 22-27 Sept 1943. Lt BCG Place VC. Towed by Stubborn. Placed charges, which exploded under Tirpitz, but was unable to escape. Place abandoned the boat and was captured. Sub Lt Aitken escaped three hours later with DSEA. Remaining two crew lost (WHITLEY, William M, Act/ERA4; WHITTAM, Lionel B, Lieutenant, RNVR). See X-craft. See details: Tirpitz attack and X7

Tirpitz/Scharnhorst raid, Kå Fjord, Norway 22-27 Sept 1943. Lt KR Hudspeth RANVR; delayed by electrical and mechanical problems in closing her original target, Scharnhorst.
