Commander G C Phillips, DSO, GM. Nov 37 to April 1940. Fired the first British submarine torpedoes of the war when attacking German Type VIIA Uboat U-35, 9-Sep-39 - the U-35 was sunk 29 Nov 39 by the British destroyers HMS Kingston, HMS Icarus and HMS Kashmir.
14 Dec 39, torpedoed the German Light cruiser Leipzig (see details)
21 Mar 40, torpedoed and sank the German merchant Heddernheim (4947 GRT) in the Skaggerak about 10 nm ENE of Skagen, Denmark in position 57º48'N, 10º53'E.

22 Feb 41, (Lt. A.J. Mackenzie, RN) torpedoed and damaged the Italian merchant Sabbia (5788 GRT) about 20 nm east of Susah, Tunisia in position 35º47'N, 11º13'E. Ursula was damaged by depth charges during a counter-attack by the Italian torpedo boat Generale Carlo Montanari.
6 May 41, attacked, but missed, the German transport ships Brook (1225 GRT) and Tilly L.M. Russ (1600 GRT) off Tripoli, Libya.
18 Sep 41 (Lt. A.R. Hezlet, RN) attacked, but missed with three torpedoes, against the Italian troop transport Vulcania (24469 GRT) off Tripoli, Libya.
18 Oct 41, torpedoed and damaged the Italian tanker Beppe (4859 BRT) some 45 nm west of Lampedusa Island in position 35º25'N, 11º39'E. The damaged Beppe is towed to Tripoli, Libya.
11 Nov 42, (Lt. R.B. Lakin, DSC, RN) attacked, but missed, the German Type VIIB U-boat U-73 off Cabo de Gata, Spain in position 36º42'N, 01º46W.
1 Dec 42, sank the Italian auxiliary submarine chaser V135/Togo (108 GRT) with scuttling charges 15 miles south of Cape Mele, Corsica.
3 Dec 42, torpedoed and sank the German merchant Sainte Marguerite II (1855 GRT) near San Remo, Italy.
28 Dec 42, torpedoed and sank the German merchant Odysseus (4140 GRT, former Norwegian Gran) about 12 nm NW of Marettimo Island, Italy in position 38º09'N, 11º54'E.
Later Soviet V4 1944-49. As V4, sank a German merchant ship in Arctic. Returned to the UK to be Broken up at Grangemouth. Another Picture.

Lt. P.R. Ward RN. 10th Flotilla, Malta. Lt. G.P. Darling RN. Sailed Malta 19 Apr 41 for patrol off NW Sicily and later the Cape Bon, Tunisia area in the Strait of Sicily. Anti-submarine activity was intense and Usk was ordered to alter her position. Most likely mined in the vicinity of Cape Bon some time after 25 Apr 41. Failed to return on 3 May, presumed lost on Italian mines. Italians claim sunk by destroyers Pigafetta and Zeno on the 4th May, west of Sicily during a convoy attack; lost with all hands.

Lt. D.R.O. Mott DSC RN. During her work-up patrol off the Norwegian coast, Feb 43, she made an unsuccessful torpedo attack on the German Type VIIC Uboat U-467.
27 Jul 43, sank the French Château Yquem (2536 BRT).
24 Sep 43, sailed Algiers for Gulf of Genoa/La Spezia patrol. Ordered to Gulf of Genoa on 3 Oct 43. Failed to answer signal on 11-Oct. Possibly mined or sunk by German anti-submarine vessel UJ.2208/Alfred in the Genoa area on the 3rd; The UJ-2208 reported attacking a submarine in the Gulf of Genoa on 3 October 1943 and it is believed that this may have been the Usurper. Lost with all hands.

9 Mar 41 torpedoed and sank the Italian merchant Capo Vita (5683 GRT) about 30 nm north-east of Sousse, Tunisia in position 36º09'N, 11º07'E.
28 Mar 41 attacked a convoy of 5 German merchants and three Italian destroyers and sinks the German merchants Heraklea (1927 GRT) and damaged the Ruhr (5954 GRT) 22 nm south-east of Kuriat, Tunisia in position 35º40'N, 11º19'E.
30 May 41 attacked, but scored no hits, on a convoy made up of the German merchant Tilly L.M. Russ (1600 GRT) and the Italian merchant Cadamosto (989 GRT) escorted by the Italian torpedo boats Pallade and Polluce off Sirte.
26 Jun 41 torpedoed and sank the Italian merchant Enrico Costa (4080 BRT) 4 nm from Cape Todaro, Sicily, Italy in position 38º07'N, 14º37'E.
28 Jul 41 torpedoed and sank the Italian merchant Frederico C. (1466 GRT) in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea of the west coast of Calabria, Italy in position 39º28'N, 15º52'E.
1 Nov 41 destroys the (already grounded and damaged) Italian merchant Marigola (5996 GRT) off Kuriat Island, Tunisia.
2 Nov 41 with ORP Sokol sank the Italian merchant Balilla (2469 BRT) about 20 nm north-west of Capo San Vito, Sicily, Italy in position 38º22'N, 12º20'E.
21 Nov 41 hit Italian cruiser Trieste with one torpedo but, although badly damaged, she (Trieste) was able to reach base at Messina with difficulty.
