Lt Cdr Guy Clarabut RN. Extra external torpedo tube.
At some point, according to his obituary in the Daily Telegraph, "In 1945 Clarabut cornered a Japanese convoy behind a boom
but was unable to fire torpedoes. So he ran along the boom in 24 feet of water and, despite the attentions of enemy aircraft,
did not give up until the convoy was ablaze and he had expended all his ammunition." The following is an account of
Stygian's activities
in the East - it can be considered representative of the operations of other British submarines making the same patrols.

Lt Cecil Crouch 1939, Lt PJ Cowell 7 Apr 1940. April 40 joined 6th
Flotilla, Blyth. 1 Oct 40 attacked four destroyers off Cape Barfleur without success. Attacked an 8 ship
convoy Oct 40, claimed one hit. Sailed Portsmouth 7 Nov 40 for Brest patrol, commanded by Lt. M.A. Langley DSC.
Failed to signal back on 15th and 16th, and not heard from again. At the time she was declared 'overdue,
presumed lost' and believed sunk in the Bay of Biscay either on mines or at the hands of German destroyers.
Her wreck was discovered in July 1983 a few miles south of St Catherine's Point off the Isle of Wight. She
had hit a mine with the loss of all hands, probably on the day she left.

28-Mar-44 | War Loss | | Lt M.H. Jupp, DSC RN - Towing submarine for X-9
on midget raid on Tirpitz, Kå Fjord,
Norway, September 1943. 7-Feb-44 towing X-22 in gale force seas, her officer of the watch - Ty/Lieutenant C.BLYTHE,RNR - was washed overboard.
Boat turned around in a rescue attempt and collided with
X-22, sinking her with the loss of her crew of four. Left
Lerwick on 16 Mar 44 for patrol off Norwegian coast. On 20 Mar she was ordered to an area near Bodø, northern
Norway in Norwegian Sea. Sank small ship Narvik by gunfire,
Sleipnesodden, Rødøy, Helgeland, on 22-March and On the 28th Syrtis was ordered to return to Lerwick. The signal was never acknowledged
and the submarine failed to return.
German reports indicate the sinking of a submarine in the Bodø area at the time by shore batteries, but the most likely cause
of her loss is a mine.
