Cammell Laird, Birkenhead 19-Nov-43 War Loss
SimoomOriginally named P75. Lt. G.D.N. Milner DSC RN.
8 Aug 43, while on patrol east of Bastia, made an unsuccessful attack on a merchant ship.
9 Aug 43 attacked the Italian cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi 5 nautical miles south-west of La Spezia, 44º04'N, 09º23'E. The torpedoes missed the cruiser but hit and sank the destroyer Vincenzo Gioberti (1685 tons) instead.
Sailed from Port Said, Egypt on 2 Nov 43 for the Aegean and arrived off the Dardanelles on 6th. Possibly sank the Italian merchant Trapani (1855 BRT) on 10 November and the Greek sailing vessel Trias on the 15th.  Failed to answer signal on 19th, presumed mined and paid off on that date. Germans claimed sunk by Type VIIc U-boat U-565 off Kos island - German radio broadcasts stated that a submarine had been destroyed in the Aegean and that several of the crew had been rescued. It was unlikely that this was Simoom, as it would have put her miles out of position. None of the claimed survivors stated that they were from Simoom. It is more likely that the submarine struck a mine or was lost through an accident.

SnapperPortsmouth 1935, Med 36-39. Between Aug 1935 to Oct 1938 was the first command of Lt. 'Tubby' Linton, later of the Turbulent, earning a posthumous VC. Home in 1939, operating with the 3rd Flotilla from Harwich. 12-Apr-40, Sank the small German tanker Moonsund by gunfire in the Northern Skagerrak, outside Larvik, Norway - of the crew on Moonsund eight men perished, while six men were taken as prisoners of war. The wreck of Moonsund has not been found, but several fishermen have lost their nets in the area. 14-Apr-40. Sank the minesweepers, Behrens and C Jansen in the Kattegat, and possibly damaged a merchant vessel of 7,500 tons in the Skagerrak. Four hits were recorded on targets in this small convoy, in an attack which had commenced while Snapper was recharging batteries on the surface. 3-Jul-40. Sank the merchant ship Cygnus, 1,300 tons. 29-Jan-41. Sailed from the Clyde on her thirteenth patrol to an area off Ushant, Bay of Biscay, commanded for the first time by Lt Prowse, in lieu of Lt Commander King DSO RN, her usual CO, who was in hospital. Left her escort at Land's End; on 7 Feb she was ordered, by signal, to remain on billet until 10 Feb and then to return home with her escort, but she was not heard from again and failed to rendezvous on 12-Feb. Possibly went down in German minefield, though a submarine attacked the German minesweepers M2, M13 and M25 on the night of the 10/11th Feb in the area where she might have been, and was subjected to a counter-attack in which 56 depth charges were dropped. She did not return to base - no signals were acknowledged after this date. This attack is the most likely cause of her loss. There were no survivors.
