Lt Cdr Con P. Thode RNZNVR (the only NZ officer to command WW2 submarines). Eastern Fleet. After trials and working up, the Scythian went out to Trincomalee, whence, between February 1945 and the end of the war, she carried out a number of patrols in the Strait of Malacca. Targets were scarce, but on her first three patrols the Scythian sank ten vessels by gunfire, for which service Thode was again Mentioned in Despatches. He had completed four years as a submariner when he paid off the Scythian in England in October 1945. Along with her sisters, Scorcher and Sirdar, Scythian took part in the search for the missing HMS Affray in 1951. Scythian appeared as the Seraph in the film "The Man Who Never Was", 1956 (Seraph herself was still in service at the time, but had undergone radical changes in appearance. As an extra touch of authenticity, Scythian was given Seraph's wartime pennant number, P219, though she didn't carry the deck gun for the film). Broken up at Charlestown, Fife. Pictured above at war and below in the 1950s, without gun.

(54.19N, 7.30E). Additionally, it is also possible that Seahorse was rammed and sunk by the German Sperrbrecher IV/Oakland south east of Heligoland on 29 December 1939. 39 crew lost.

Seascout - on right, Dutch Zwaardvis (?) leftLt. J.W. Kelly RN. (Sir) John Harvey-Jones (later of ICI) 1st Lt. in 1944-45. Ordered to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) mid 44. On Christmas Eve 1944, Sea Scout was ordered out to patrol the Nicobar, Andaman Islands and Sabang. On the 29th they were able to shell beached coasters and the pier in the Nicobars, however no further targets were found for the rest of the patrol. Sea Scout undertook four more patrols prior to the end of the war but, with the lack of sizeable ships, targets were becoming hard to find; however, Sea Scout sank seven junks, damaged a pier and sank a coaster while patrolling off the north coast of Sumatra during the second patrol. On the third patrol, Sea Scout left Colombo on 31 Mar 45 to search the Flores Sea prior to joining HMS Adamant in Fremantle as part of the 4th Flotilla. The fourth and fifth patrols were in the Gulf of Siam and, although many small targets were encountered and sunk on both patrols, nothing of significance was encountered. 17 minor ships and some barges had been sunk in Sea Scout's patrols. She was still on patrol when the “Cease Fire” signal was broadcast and the submarine was recalled and told to proceed to Subic Bay, Philippines. Served another 20 years. Broken up at Briton Ferry, with Seraph.

Porpoise37M 55 27-Sep-38 HMDY Chatham 05-May-40 Captured
Minelayer. Lt Cdr RP Lonsdale RN. First war patrol in Gulf of Aden. Returned to UK for patrols in North Sea and convoy-protection in Atlantic. Transferred to 6th Flotilla.
29 Apr 40 sailed for minelaying operation DF7 with 50 mines from Immingham, to lay minefield near the Swedish island of Vinga in the Kattegat, across German transport route to Norway. This minefield later claimed three Swedish vessels and the German merchant Vogesen (4241 GRT).
While evading surface ASW craft, hit mine and forced to sit on bottom until dark. Surfaced eventually but almost uncontrollable. Aft compartments flooded. Tried to make for Sweden. One engine started but stern damage caused the boat to circle.
At 0250 4th May 40 attacked by German He-115 aircraft from Aalborg, Denmark. Spotted by German Ar-196 seaplane, which attacked. Joined by second 'Arado'. Unable to dive, with crew suffering from CO2 poisoning, Seal put up a fight but the Lewis gun jammed.
At 0630 the German submarine-hunter UJ-128 arrived on the scene. The crew surrendered, expecting the boat to sink, but it stayed afloat. 60 crew taken prisoner.
Boat towed to Frederikshavn, Denmark, and on 11 May to Kiel. Commissioned by Germany as UB.A in Nov 1940, commanded by Fregkpt. Bruno Mahn, a WWI veteran of UB-21. UB.A had limited value for Germany except for training and propaganda purposes. One benefit was the analysis of British torpedoes, leading to improved detonators for the unreliable German torpedoes. Lt Cdr Lonsdale, the CO, was court-martialled after the war, but exonerated. Decommissioned in July 1941 and scuttled in Heikendorf Bay, Kiel, (54.22N, 10.11E) 3 May 1945. The wreck was later raised and broken up. See more details.
