MIRAGE FORESTAY ATTACHMENT MODIFICATION (M29/30/33/35)

Note - there was a similar page for Procedure "A" - This was a more simple installation - It involved installing a large heavy duty 3/8" diameter U-bolt using the same hole centres and backing plate as that shown below - It however means that the forestay needed to be shorter - this could usually be taken up in the turnbuckle but when a furler was present, this was not always possible.

SYSTEM "B" KIT.

NOTE: The use of this attachment system does not require any~change in forestay length, and no re-fitting of any furling gear system.

PROCEDURE "B": TO FIT FORESTAY ATTACHMENT SYSTEM "B" TO THE BOW CASTING.

1) See sketch for ATTACHMENT SYSTEM "B" assembly.

2) Use the backing plate to establish centering and thru-hole location in the cavity under the lip of the deck/hull and bow plate casting.

3) Pre-drill two holes, 1 7/8", apart, using a 1/8" drill. Ascertain that the 1 7/8" distance is being held right through to the top of the bow casting, and that the holes are equidistant on each side of the forestay attachment flange.

4) final line-up of the holes is made with a 5/l6" drill. Work the drill-bit from both sides, if necessary.

5) The holes in the casting must be enlarged with a 21/64" drill to allow for seating of the carriage-head bolts.

6) Temporarily fit the two reinforcing angle pieces to the bow casting in order to establish the location of a clearance-hole in the forestay attachment flange.
NOTE; These angle pieces are in sets, port & st'bd

7) The new clearance hole probably will not co-incide with the previous forestay hole location. It should be drilled or filed to accept the new long clevis pin.

8) After the two angle plates have been correctly fitted to the bow casting, attach the forestay turnbuckle toggle between them; push the two carriage-head bolts through the bow plate casting, deck/hull, and the backing plate; then tighten the self-locking nuts.
