Venice

Oil on canvas, circa 1969.

From an ink sketch of unknown origin.

Venice canal scenes are popular subjects of decorative art. They are not particularly profound or moving but I was determined to try my hand at such "eye candy" and at the same time break new ground, for me, in oil technique on a larger scale (over 1 square meter). Prior to this, I hadn't tried painting on stretched canvas, which has its own, more springy, characteristics.

If I painted this today, it would, no doubt, turn out quite different.
