Acrylic on canvas panel, circa 1971. The subject of this portrait is well depicted by the use of acrylic paint, since the rougher facial features don't need the fine blending technique available with oils. In fact, the intent here is to bring out as much of the sharp details of the face as possible to give the impression of age. This impression is further accentuated by the angle of the lighting that emphasizes the details through the contrast between highlights and shadows. The blurring of the objects in the background and their subdued tone puts even more emphasis on the sharpness of the highlights of the subject. It also serves to create a feeling of depth by the separation of the subject from the background. |
