or as part of a 12-show tour package with the 8 shows from the Washington Square Church series

held one week earlier.  This is available with any of the above links.

These shows are part of a residency at this particular venue at 150 Mercer Street.

The proceeds went to help a local Soho theatre company.

From Fripp’s diary on February 17, 2003

The touring in 1981 was mainly for King Crimson in its Discipline period, although I did play Frippertronics for 2 weeks in NYC, as a benefit for a Soho theatre company. The first week was a residency at Washington Square Church, the second week at the company's 80 seat theatre in Soho where writer Chip Stern brought Max Roach to a performance, and Vernon Reid also visited.

Alex “Stormy” Mundy synchronized two separate reels to produce these wonderful recordings.

One of the only live recordings that includes the solo element direct from the source tape.

There is a very slight warble noticeable on the master tape of some of the backing loop,

(more pronounced on the right channel, but audible on both)

which is a result of imperfect tape tension between the two Revoxes.

A commonly encountered “hazard” to this analogue technology.

This would have been permanently “printed” onto the master tape and subsequently unavoidable.

There is also a very small amount of reverb was added to both the backing loops and the solo element

during the mastering.

These recordings also contain many examples of Fripp employing a variation of his normal

Frippertronics delay system by employing a signal splitter.

This process is described in detail here as Frippertronics Variation I

A number of weird anomalies have been noticed and are listed below.

It is unknown whether these additional variations were intentional or accidental.

Our guess is accidental when it resulted in muted channels, but not accidental

when it comes to muted notes (at the beginning of loops), omitted from the delay feedback system.

The most notable variation is August 7 - Loop I

The delay is identical to the regular Frippertronics delay system except that the delay time

between the left and right channels is about 500ms, which is about 3 times as long as the usual 178ms.

Perhaps the tape speed was altered or a different model or modification of Revox was utilized for these performances which has a much wider distance between the playback and recording heads, creating this extended delay time.  The effect is similar to the half-speed playback re-mastering of Fripp & Eno’s No Pussyfooting, although even more pronounced here and without the octave lower pitch alteration.

Some of the “Variation I type”  loops have unusual opening segments, which begin BEFORE Fripp

introduces the signal into the delay path.  Or to simplify, includes unrepeated notes at the beginning.

The pieces that have this characteristic are :

August 4 - Loop II

August 4 - Loop III

August 4 - Loop IV

August 6 - Loop II

Some of the Variation I type”  loops have one of the channels muted or very quiet

for a portion at the beginning of the loop, which we believe was not intended.

The pieces that have this characteristic are :

August 5, Loop I (1 min - right channel muted then cuts in)

August 6, Loop I (53 sec - right channel muted then cuts in)

August 7, Loop IV (2 mins - right channel very low and is faded up to match the left)
