or as part of a 12-show tour package combined with the 4 shows from the Inroads series held one week later.

This is available with any of the above links.

These shows were part of a week long residency at Washington Square United Methodist Church,

located at 135 West Fourth Street.  The proceeds went to help a local Soho theatre company.

July 27 - Loop I (DGM Sound Sample)

was used by King Crimson almost exclusively as introductory “walk-on” music

during their from October 1981 to March 1982 tours of North America, Europe and Japan.

An audience bootleg recording exists of the July 28, 1981 performance.  Details below.

From Fripp’s diary on February 17, 2003

The touring in 1981 was mainly for King Crimson in its Discipline period, although I did play Frippertronics for 2 weeks in NYC, as a benefit for a Soho theatre company. The first week was a residency at Washington Square Church, the second week at the company's 80 seat theatre in Soho where writer Chip Stern brought Max Roach to a performance, and Vernon Reid also visited.

Alex “Stormy” Mundy synchronized two separate reels to produce these wonderful recordings.

One of the only live recordings that includes the solo element direct from the source tape.

There is a very slight warble noticeable on the master tape of some of the backing loop,

(more pronounced on the right channel, but audible on both)

which is a result of imperfect tape tension between the two Revoxes.

A commonly encountered “hazard” to this analogue technology.

This would have been permanently “printed” onto the master tape and subsequently unavoidable.

There is also a very small amount of reverb was added to both the backing loops and the solo element

during the mastering.

These recordings also contain many examples of Fripp employing a variation of his normal

Frippertronics delay system by employing a signal splitter for the feedback signal from the right to left Revox.

This unconfirmed process is described in detail here as Frippertronics Variation I

A number of weird anomalies have been noticed and are listed below.

It is unknown whether these additional variations were intentional or accidental.

Our guess is accidental when it resulted in muted channels, but not accidental

when it comes to muted notes (at the beginning of loops), omitted from the delay feedback system.

A notable variation is August 2 - Afternoon - Loop I

The delay is identical to the regular Frippertronics delay system except that the delay time

between the left and right channels is about 500ms, which is about 3 times as long as the usual 178ms.

Alex Mundy confirmed that the original tape transfer of this piece was monophonic, so this track represents

a special digital enhancement and the stereo delay time was artificial and not a result of some

unknown analogue process.  Fripp likely forgot to record BOTH channels of the right Revox, resulting in a straight monophonic Frippertronics loop on the source tape.  This may also explain why there is no

corresponding “Solo” to synchronize.

Some of the “Variation I type”  loops have unusual opening segments, which begin BEFORE Fripp

introduces the signal into the delay path.  Or to simplify, includes unrepeated notes at the beginning.

The pieces that have this characteristic are :

August 1 - Evening - Loop I                   August 2 - Afternoon - Loop I

August 1 - Evening - Loop III                 August 2 - Afternoon - Loop II

August 1 - Evening - Loop IV                 August 2 - Afternoon - Loop III

August 2 - Evening - Loop I                   August 2 - Afternoon - Loop IV

August 2 - Evening - Loop IV

On July 30th, Fripp replayed and soloed on top of Loop III from July 28th, but appears to have

stopped either the backing tape or stopped soloing after 7:58.  The entire backing track is 10:39.

The DGM recording fades out quickly instead of cutting out which is unusual.

We do not understand why this would or could occur as it was a replay of a previously recorded loop.

It is unknown whether Fripp included another copy of the backing track with the solos from this show,

or if it was simply marked as such, allowing Alex Mundy to synchronize.

This does not explain why it was faded out early however.

Text Box: ALTERNATE CD-R VERSION

Audience Bootleg Notes

Upgraded from a low generation cassette copy.

Pitch-corrected, low end and stereo enhanced

with some editing repairs and restorations.

A fairly distant mono recording likely from a balcony position.

The 2nd symbol beside the track names

indicates if a patch from a different loop was used.

Unfortunately, it appears that someone near the recording device

decided that this performance was the ideal place to exhibit his

“musical talents”,  by occasionally whistling out of tune with the loops.

Sadly the results are very irritating and virtually impossible to ignore.

Almost all of these sections have (when possible) been edited out

by replacing the section with an earlier or later identical loop section,

or with the corresponding creation or replay version section.

However this was not always possible as some occurred while Fripp

was soloing or adding new loop elements.

The end result is more bearable, but far from ideal.

This low quality audience bootleg is also missing

the opening “Test Loop” (1885 creation loop).

It does however contain prominent audience applause from that perspective as well as some very sporadic “solo elements” that were played by Fripp

during the “creation loops” 1888, 1887 and 1886

(which have now been officially named Loop I, II and III)

A personal project to combine any the missing solo elements

from Loop I, Loop II and Loop III (creation versions),

along with applause captured on the audience bootleg

synchronized with the official backing loops has been completed

and the track listing appears above beside the official DGM version above.

It is unavailable for circulation, but is the definitive version

of this performance as it the most complete and captures the

atmosphere of the venue without sacrificing the excellent quality

of the backing loops.
