Afternoon Solo Performance Notes

The only known Frippertronics date in 1980,

during a break in The League of Gentlemen World Tour.

A nice stereo recording, which would be rated much higher, however somewhere in the process of transfer from analogue cassette to CD, some weird digital noise was inadvertently introduced.  It can be heard during silences and between notes if the pauses are long enough.

For some odd reason, there is a version of 1871 Over 1875 that fades out after 2 minutes, which is immediately followed by a complete version.  It is not an extra replay, but rather a portion of the identical recording.

It has been omitted.

1872 Over 1876 appeared out of sequence...before 1873.

This makes no sense for Fripp to have performed it in this order. It would have meant Fripp would have rewound to the start of the tape, then fast forwarded to the end, performed 1873, then rewound to the start of 1873

to replay it, then rewound back to the 2nd track of the evening.  It would have been very cumbersome and difficult to locate.  A more probable sequence has been restored here.

1873, 1869 Over 1873 and 1865 are performances using

a Roland Saturn 09 keyboard  through the Revox system.

This keyboard is used on The League of Gentlemen vinyl LP on tracks Pareto Optimum I, Pareto Optimum II and Ochre.

1876 appears to be have been created as the audience entered the theatre.

1866 and 1865 are replays without solos, used as “exit music” from the theatre,  assumed to have been pre-recorded sometime prior to this performance.

An announcement is made at the beginning of 1866 by an ICA Theatre employee “Everyone … clear the building !”.

The reason for this request is now obvious, due to the recent appearance of the Evening show.

SOLO FRIPPERTRONICS PERFORMANCE

ROBERT FRIPP & KEITH TIPPETT

Evening Fripp & Tippett Performance Notes

The only known Frippertronics duet performance.

Fripp explains that both shows were billed as

Robert Fripp & Keith Tippett, however the piano

did not arrive in time for the afternoon performance,

thus the reason it is only Frippertronics.

An audience member requested a duet, which was

not planned, but they agreed to attempt a keyboard duet.

For 1879, Fripp played a Roland Saturn 09 keyboard through the Frippertronics delay system, while Tippett alternately played some sort of metallic percussion and piano.

1878 appears to be Tippett making odd sounds on and inside the piano and occasionally adding his voice.

Fripp presumably was setting up the tape loop for the replay version but by the end adds some minimal unamplified guitar sounds.

1877 Over 1879 is Fripp replaying the stereo version

of his Frippertronic organ piece (1879) over which

he solos with his guitar along with additional piano soloing by Tippett.

A decent stereo recording, but with some issues,

such as some careless EQing and level boosting.

Remastered to compensate for severe treble boosting

and an extra 4db on the right channel.  Fortunately a limiter appears to have been used.  Some tape hiss has been removed as the original recording must have been low during some portions of the performance.

Two versions of 1726 over 1727/28 were included,

both incomplete.  The first missing beginning

and the ending.  The second missing a larger

part of the beginning but with the complete ending.

Sonically identical, so the longest complete version

has been compiled and attached to the missing portion

of the beginning using the first minute of the creation version with a “Frippertronic delay” simulation.

Fripp also explains that he will replay the Frippertronics guitar pieces for a third time to serve as a musical backdrop as the audience exits the theatre.  The first note

of 1728 is heard just as the tape fades out.  To simulate this experience, another version of 1728 and 1727 has been included at the end adding the “Frippertronic delay” to simulate a “stereo replay” which approximates what  one would have heard as you left the venue.
