What's the connection between an upset stomach and writing? Keep reading and you'll find out!

Having suffered from very painful stomach aches since my early childhood, I have tried all kinds of therapies which proved unsuccessful. Tired of using oral medicine, I realized there was a link between the events in my life, my emotional reactions to them, the vocabulary I used to describe them, and the resulting physical pain.

I stumbled upon this discovery during my recovery from childhood trauma. I was back home for a vacation and talked to family members about events that had happened to me 30 years earlier.

They responded to this intimate sharing by opening themselves to me. Within three weeks, I knew all their dark secrets. I was both touched (I appreciated their trust) and overwhelmed (so much had been hidden).

At that time, I remember talking about the difficulty I had in digesting this information, and suffering from terrible stomach aches. Writing a diary was a way to put things into perspective and, by laying my pain on paper, I was moving the conflict away from my stomach and dealing with it. It actually worked!

Later on, whenever I had a stomach ache, I took a piece of paper and, even if the internal conflict was not readily apparent, writing about it helped me discover what it was.

I still do it. I can either start with a question such as "Why do I feel so uncomfortable with so-and-so?" or with a description of my pain. The results are amazing. I write answers to my questions without even knowing I had them. When I begin writing, the pain usually increases, especially when I am about to uncover the real cause of the hurt. It then fades slowly away. Often I don't find a solution, but the writing process is healing in itself and can at least lessen the pain.

This method may not be useful to everyone but if you are aware of your feelings, it will probably benefit you. There are other advantages: it can be done anywhere and anytime, it doesn't have any side effects, and it costs nothing! A tip: If you speak several languages, write your feelings in the language of your emotions. Happy writing!
