In this universe of accelerating change, activity, and stress, a bubble of peace is a rare and welcome treat. One way to achieve this temporary peace is through meditation. However, the discipline it takes to sit quietly and think of nothing often requires more effort than we are willing to endure. While there are many different and sometimes intricate ways to meditate, these few tips should simplify meditation for you, especially if you are a beginner. Find the time to do it. This is one of the biggest challenges we face in our busy schedules. Strive to meditate when you first wake up in the morning, or just before going to bed. At the beginning, try no more than five minutes at a time so that you develop discipline in bite sizes. A short period of calm is better than nothing. Once you are doing it regularly, slowly increase the length of your meditation. Still the mind. The idea sounds self-defeating, doesn`t it? With our minds always on the go, how can we slow it down? According to Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Travelled series, just sitting quietly every day and letting your ideas roam is a great way to achieve success. Try this approach at first. Later on, you will be better prepared to work on the mind. Breathe. We usually don`t breathe properly. Take a few deep breaths, then practice what I call `triangular breathing`: inhale for a count of 7, hold your breath for a count of 7, and breathe out for a count of 7. You can increase or decrease the count, but make sure all three parts are the same duration. Locate the quiet spot inside. Find within yourself a `quiet spot`: the part of you that always stays calm even when the rest of you is going berserk! And stay in this spot. One way to find it is to tell yourself something like `Deep down, I am calm`. Enjoy. Make your meditation a special time, a time to regenerate yourself. Think of happy thoughts such as love, peace, or the beauty of nature. I have practiced meditation twice a day for about 10 years. The results never cease to amaze me. These peaceful moments have helped me stop headaches, sleep better at night, find solutions to problems, get new ideas, increase my energy level, and so much more. What are you waiting for?
