Some days, life is beautiful and we are on top of the world. Other days, everything seems to be falling apart and nothing makes sense any longer. Without changing the good days, what can you do to make the bad ones less painful? Depending on how depressed you feel, you could benefit from some of the following ideas*.

For me, depression feels like being buried in the dark. I have difficulty remembering why my life is worth living. In this case, I just trust that somewhere there is a reason, and I will eventually find it when I am feeling better. I just keep it on hold. Being patient with myself, I recover faster.

Unfortunately, many people take the reverse approach. How do you treat yourself when you are dispirited? Your best friend is having a bad day. Would you tell him: `You may feel depressed but you are still my friend` or `You are such an idiot to feel that way!`? Since you probably intend to spend the rest of your life with yourself, please be your own best friend and give yourself a break.

You also have to realize that, when you are feeling down, you are not objective. Don`t trust your thinking because it is not based on reality. By all means, refrain from explaining your life theory at that time! You are not thinking clearly but people may still take you seriously and worry about you, especially your loved ones.

I strongly believe in the power of affirmations. I have found that repeating something positive, especially when I feel the opposite way, slowly brings my mood back to normal. Use a positive statement such as `My life is getting better in every way` instead of `My life is not a mess` since the subconscious mind tends to cancel out negative words. Presumably, you won`t believe in your affirmation at first, but your subconscious mind will take notice and send positive reinforcement to your conscious mind. You will then start to feel better.

Be kind to yourself: call a friend, take a bubble bath, go for a walk, stroke your cat, watch a funny movie! If you are afraid to harm yourself, do not hesitate to call a crisis line or to seek professional help. It is normal to have ups and downs. You are not alone and you are going to feel better. The Sun is always shining somewhere even when it is temporarily out of sight.
