Harriett's family lived in San Francisco in 1906. It was a few days shy of Harriett's 12th birthday and she and her sister were sleeping when the big earthquake hit. The chimney from the house next door fell right across the foot of their bed. Luckily they both had their legs curled up. As many families lost everything they relied on donations from other cities. Harriett acquired a dress that became her favorite. Shortly after the earthquake Harrietts family moved to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles Harriett ended up in school with the little girl that had donated the dress.
Harriett was married to a man with the last name of Robertson. They had a son named Harold. He left the country. It is not known exactly where Harrietts husband went but it is believed that he went to South America. Harriett married George Kenneth Black when Harold was about 4 years old. Harold was raised as Harold James Black and assumed the name Black as an adult.
During the depression, Harriett cleaned school teachers homes and used her sewing skills repairing clothing mostly for farmers wives. She was paid mostly in food stuffs.
Told to Janet Marie (Owens) Smith by Marjorie Fidelis (Black) Owens, November 10, 2002.
