Jane Bruce Black died at the residence of her son Robert Black, Gainsboro, Ontario, Canada on Friday, March 23,1900 at the age of 96. She was bown in Scotland and together with her late husband, George Black and family of eleven children, emigrated to America in 1854 and settled on the farm now owned by Angus Johnson, Camboro Road. While living there, her husband died while he was no a visit to his eldest son at Hudson, Quebec, about sixty miles west of Montreal. The family then moved to the Forks Road for a few years, finally settling on the fram in Gainsboro where she lived out her life. Wherever she lived, she made many warm friends and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in distress. "Grandma Black", as the neighbors familiarly called her, will not soon be forgotten. She was a member of the Presbyterian church until after her removal here when she united with the Evangelical Association of which she remained a faithful member. As long as the infirmaties of age permitted, she was never absent from the Sanctuary and Sabbath School. Her illness was of short duration. For about 3 weeks she was confined to her bed and on March 23, passed peacefully away. During this time she was continually repeating passages of scripture, esoecially the last two lines of the 23rd Psalm: "and in God's house forevermore my dwelling place shall be." We might say that for the last few years her mind had been gradually failing and twice a child was fulfilled, in her case. Her shoes had to be hidden because she was forever running away - going back to Scotland. Her pastor, the Rev. Bean of Attercliff Station, preached from the text: "Let me die the death of the rightous and let my last end be like his."
Three of her children preceded her in death a few years ago. Those left to mourn the loss of a loving mother were: Mrs. Calvin Robins (Grace), Mrs. Samuel Burns (Jane), James and Alexander Black - all of Michigan. Mrs. N. Reid(Margaret) of Lunneville, Mrs. J.D. Brewer (Helen) of Crowland and Mrs. Philip Naergarth (Mary) and Rober Black of Gainsboro.
"The rightour shall be hald in everlasting remembrance"
