WHY COULDN’T THEY BELONG TO ME?

I hear it on the news
And see their faces on TV
In disbelief I wonder…
Why couldn’t they belong to me?

One was badly beaten
His tiny body was black and blue.
Another one was left all alone
For a week or maybe two.

As I think about these children
My eyes fill up with tears
How could a parent abuse the gift
Which I’ve prayed for all these years?

There are others out there
With no children of their own
Who, like me, would do anything,
To give these little ones a home.

So, please don’t harm your children;
Please don’t let me see
Another baby die by his parents’ hands
When he could've belonged to me.
