Glossary of Internet Terms

A

Abort

When grelins cause the operator to permaturely terminate the execution of a program. When you
abort it's usually because some sort of error has made further progress impossible on the
program.

Access

To access a disk refers to the computer successfully finding and loading or writing a piece of
data to or from the storage system. The efficiency of this operation is often termed access time.

Access Time

The time it takes for a computer devise to transfer information from its storage system to the
computer's screen or memory.

Acoustic Coupler

A device which acts as a reverse telephone headset, enabling data to be sent or received over
the telephone. The computer converts serial data into audio modulations which can be intrepreted
by a computer at the receiving end. An acoustic coupler is an important component in communications.

Address

Eacg byte stored in memory must be located by an address so its value can be found when needed.

Address Bus

ADSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. New technology to carry high speed data over ordinary phone
lines. It will be up to 70 times as fast as a 28.8 modem, and can be used concurrently with
voice over the same line. Expected to be offered to homes commercially beginning in 1998 or
1999. It is called "asymmetric" because download speeds to the subscriber are faster then
upload speeds from the subscriber. See DSL.

AIFF

Audio Interchange File Format. A common audio file format originally for Macs, but used with
other systems, too. See the Audio Guide and the File Extension Guide for more information.

Applet

An application that is downloaded from a web page and executed by browser software. Also, an
HTML tag that defines an applet program.

Archie

Short for Archiver. One of the first search engines introduced to the nets. Archie is software
that indexes thousands of ftp sites and lets you search for the files and software that you want.

See History.

ASCII

American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A standard way to encode upper and lower
case letters in the English alphabet, numbers, and special characters using only seven digits,
and therefore limited to 128 characters. The basis for coding simple text files. See ASCII Table.

ASCII files

ASCII files are those that only use the 128 characters that can be encoded with 7 binary digits.
This means that most text files are ASCII files. Word processed files, which include special
characters and control codes are usually encoded with 8 binary digits. Some

Internet protocols only support 7-bit text, such as simple mailers and newsgroups. Because of
this, ways have been developed to encode binary files into ASCII form. The most common of these
are uuencode and binhex, the latter for Macintosh files, primarily. Two more examples of 7-bit
file systems are postscript (.ps files) and TeX (.tex files), which are word processing systems
that allow encoding of complex information in 7-bit form. Common extensions for ASCII files are
.txt, .uue, .xxe, .hqx, .ps, and .tex. Also files with names like README or index are almost
always text files. The .doc extension may be text or may be 8-bit, and you need to know more
about it to be sure.

B

Backbone

A central network connecting other networks together. Formerly a network run by the National
Science Foundation for the US, there are now multiple backbones run by commercial providers
such as MCI, Sprint, UUNET, and AT&T.

Bandwidth

Literally, the frequency width of a transmission channel in Hertz, kiloHertz, megaHertz, etc.
Often used as an expression of the amount of data that can be sent through a circuit. The greater
the bandwidth, the greater the amount of data that can travel in a given time period.

Binary

Binary means the use of only two values, zero and one, in encoding data. All digital computers
primarily use some form of binary encoding, such as 8 or 16 or 32 binary digits at a time.
Characters that you see on screen or type with your keyboard are normally encoded with 8 binary
digits. For example, the binary value for the letter A is 01000001.

Binary files

Binary files are files that include up to 256 different characters and are encoded by 8 binary
digits (bits) for each character. Simple text or ASCII files only use 128 different characters
and can be encoded by 7 binary digits. Examples of binary files are most programs, most word-
processed files, most graphics files, and most sound files. If you don't know a file is ASCII,
it is probably a binary file.

Bit

Short for binary digit.

Boolean search

A method of searching for information in databases that combines search terms with the operators
AND, OR, NOT, and parentheses. See a fuller explanation in our file, What is Boolean Searching?

Bounce

The return of an e-mail message because of an error in its address or delivery.

Bozo filter

In Usenet, a kill file that filters out articles from undesirable bozos.

Browser

Software that will load and display a web page. The principle browsers are Netscape, Microsoft
Internet Explorer, Mosaic, and the text-only Lynx. See the Internet Software Guide.

C

CDSL

Acronym for Consumer Digital Subscriber Line. Rockwell's new technology for digital modems that
will use regular telephone lines and run at speeds up to 1 MBps. See ADSL and DSL.

CGI

Common Gateway Interface. A method used by WWW pages to communicate with programs run on the
web server.

Client-server architecture

In client server architecture, the computing load is distributed among the many clients as well
as the server that holds the information. This can be illustrated today by the difference between
SLIP/PPP dial up accounts where each remote computer runs its own client software for the web,
telnet, ftp, and so on and dial up information services where the central host runs all the software.

Cookie

A cookie is a short file put on your system by a browser which includes information about your
usage and facilitates the current interaction. For example, it may include the information that
you have logged into a passworded area already in the current session and don't need a second
password check. There are many uses for cookies, they may be erased at the end of a session or
retained until the next session, and they may be encrypted or in plain text. For a more thorough
explanation of cookies, see the cookie section of our article on Privacy and the Cookie FAQ at cookiecentral.com.

Country code

Most countries in the world that are connected to the Internet have been assigned two-letter
country codes by the international standard ISO 3166. These two letter codes are the major
domain addresses for the country. For a complete list of them, see our Country Code List.

D

Dither

To simulate a colour that is not part of the current palette on-screen (or in print) by
combining pixels of different colours close to each other. Viewed from a distance, it gives
the effect of the colour. Viewed closely, the dots are visible. Dithering can give a noisy
appearance to a picture on-screen, but it often can be avoided by selecting non-dithering
colours that are compatible with different browsers and platforms. See Creating Small,
Fast-Loading Graphics for Web Pages for more help with this.

DNS

Domain Name System. DNS servers are located at many strategic places on the nets to resolve
the routing of e-mail and Internet connections. There are nine or more major, top-level DNS
servers, which are updated daily, and these in turn feed the updated DNS information to
smaller subordinate DNS servers, which hold more detailed information on their specific
areas of coverage. No single DNS server has all the address information of the Internet,
and successful routing may require routing through several levels of servers.

Domain name

Domain name addresses, together with IP addresses, are the two forms of Internet addresses
in common use. Domain name addresses all end with a correct top-level domain. The top-level
domains may be any of these:

    com
    edu
    gov
    int
    mil
    net
    org

a two-letter country code, such as us, uk, or mx. See the country code table.

A complete domain address adds one or more terms to the left of the top-level domain, separated
by dots. The top-level domain at the right is the most general; each term to the left is more
specific.

A recent international meeting approved the use of seven new top-level domain names, currently
planned for implementation in March 1998:

   firm
   store
   web
   arts
   rec
   nom
   info

DOS

Acronym for Disk Operating System. Literally, the term refers that portion of an operating
system that controls writing, storage, and retrieval of data from storage media, usually
spinning disks of various types. In common usage, the term refers to MS DOS, the complete
operating system developed by Microsoft for IBM-compatible personal computers in text
(non-Windows) modes.

DSL

Acronym for Digital Subscriber Line or Digital Subscriber Loop, often referred to as xDSL.
It refers to several new digital technologies for fast two-way data connections over
ordinary telephone lines. Rockwell announced a new Consumer DSL or CDSL technology in
October 1997, which will offer speeds up to 1MBps in late 1998. The other technologies
offer speeds up to 8 times as fast as that, but require more complicated installation
and probably will not be available to the public as soon, although local tests may start
appearing in the near future. See ADSL.

E

E-mail

Electronic mail. One of the earliest standard Internet protocols which enables people with
different computers and operating systems to communicate with each other. E-mail allows
one-to-one or one-to-many mailings. Mail is received and held by a mail server within
an organization or by an Internet service provider until the addressee logs on to collect
the mail. The Internet e-mail standards include no provision for authenticating the sender,
which makes it possible for spammers to use false From addresses and routing. See the E-mail
FAQ.

Emoticon

See smiley face.

Extranet

A network that supplements a closed intranet by providing access to customers, suppliers,
subcontractors, and others outside the organization who have a need for selective information
from the organization. It is not accessible to the Internet at large.

F

FAQ

Acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. FAQ files are collections of common questions and
answers for a particular subject area. For example, see the Navigating the Net FAQ for general
Internet and World Wide Web questions and answers and the Publishing on the Web FAQ for
questions and answers on creating web pages. For many more FAQs, visit the Usenet FAQ Archive
at Ohio State

Flaming

it can apply to mailing lists and other forms of public messaging.

Frames

Frames are a technique used in web pages to divide the page into multiple windows, where each
window is called a frame and can contain its own separate page. The advantage of frames is
that one window can be scrolled or changed while other windows remain fixed for such purposes
as keeping a menu in view all the time. The disadvantage is that not all browsers support them.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol. The Internet protocol that permits you to transfer files between your
system and another system. You can use its command language from a shell account or various
programs with SLIP/PPP accounts that simplify the process.

FUBAR

HyperText Markup Language. The coding system used to create WWW pages. A page written
in HTML is a text file that includes tags in angle brackets that control the fonts and
type sizes, insertion of graphics, layout of tables and frames, paragraphing, calls to
short runnable programs, and hypertext links to other pages. Files written in HTML
generally use an .html or .htm extension.

Http

HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is the main protocol used on the World Wide Web that
enables linking to other web sites. Addressing to other web pages begins with
"http://" and is followed by the domain name or IP address. See URL.

Hypertext

A form of text which includes visible links to other pages of text or media, accessible
by clicking or selecting the links.

meet in conference groups (called channels) and chat with each other by typing. For
more information, see the IRC FAQ.

ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network. A technology that carries data over phone lines
at up to 128Kbps--about 4 times as fast as a 28.8K modem. Slow to get started in the
US, it is likely to be overtaken by the much faster and no more expensive ASDL over
the next few years.

ISP

web pages to create applets that will run on different platforms.

JavaScript

A simpler form of Java developed by Netscape for developing applets.

JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group, a graphical format that is widely used in WWW
pages. It is particularly well suited to photographs and 3D or VRML images where
there is a continuous range of colors or shades. It is a lossy format that can be
reduced in file size by reducing the detail in the image. JPEG files use a .jpg or
less commonly, .jpeg or .jpe extension. See also GIF.

K

L

of things. The term "lurker" is sometimes used negatively to refer to people who
take from discussions, but never give.

M

Mailbomb

Flood a single e-mail address with a high volume of mail. Used to retaliate against
an individual or organization that has bothered the sender(s) in some way. Please
note that the practice violates all ISP user agreements and wastes bandwidth and
resources. Its effects go far beyond the annoyance to the addressee. Don't try it!

MIDI

Musical Instrument Digital Interface. See the Audio Guide and the File Extension
Guide for more information.

MIME

Acronym for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. The standard for attaching binary
files to Internet mail messages. Its usage has been extended to identifying and
handling file types encountered by web servers and browsers. Binary types include
audio, video, graphics, spreadsheets, formatted word-processor documents, executable
programs, etc. An email program is said to be MIME Compliant if it can both send and
receive files using MIME. When binary files are sent using the MIME standard they are
converted (encoded) into text for mailing and then decoded by the receiving mailer.
If the receiving mailer is not MIME compliant, the file is received in encoded form.
If an encoded file is received with "Base64" in the header, it is MIME encoded. There
are Base64 decoders available separately for various operating systems. For Windows,
WinCode will handle decoding offline.

In mail MIME-compliant mail applications, you will see several header lines concerned
with MIME. For text-only files, it will look something like this:

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

There are many content types. Here are some common ones:

text/plain as the usual mail message
text/html HTML text
image/jpeg a common image format.
image/gif another common image format
application/octet-stream unknown type, 8-bit data
audio/midi midi music format
audio/x-midi an alternate for the above

Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Andreeson graduated and went on to found Netscape
and the Netscape browser.

MUD

Acronym for Multi-User Domain, Multi-User Dimension, or Multi-User Dungeon. An online
interactive computer game or exploration medium. Early MUDs were Dungeons & Dragons
-like games in text-only forms, but they have grown into many other forms, too. They
are now used for social gatherings, interactive learning, chat rooms, and much more,
as well as games. Originally accessible only through telnet, some of them have migrated
to the web, and even appeared in graphical virtual reality forms. Variations are known
as MUSHes, MUSEs, and MOOs. For specific examples, see Yahoo's list of links to MUDs,
MUSHes, MOOs, etc.

N

Netiquette

that can keep communication on the Internet a pleasure for all. See Guidelines for
Posting to Newsgroups.

Newsgroup

See Usenet newsgroups

O

P

Palette

The set of colors used in a picture or on a computer screen. Older computers typically
used only 16 colors. Modern ones use at least 256 colors, which can be coded by 8 bits
of information. With advanced color cards and monitors 65.5 thousand colors (16-bit)
or 16 million colors (24-bit) are used. Different web browsers and computer platforms
do not necessarily use identical palettes. There is a set of 216 colors that are
considered browser and platform safe, which web page designers should use, if they want
screens to look essentially the same on each computer that views them. See Creating
Small, Fast-Loading Graphics for Web Pages for more help with this.

PING

Packet InterNet Groper. An Internet utility used to check the connection with another
site. It bounces a signal off the remote site and shows you how long it took to complete
the round trip. If you get no return, the site is either down or unreachable. You can
run PING software on your own system with a PPP or net account, or you can use it as a
command from Delphi's NavNet textside Utilities menu and from most shell accounts.
See traceroute.

Pixel

One dot on a computer screen. Todays least expensive monitors typically are 640 pixels
wide and 480 pixels high. Larger and more expensive monitors range up to 1600 x 1200
pixels and special purpose monitors may go much higher than that.

polite excuse to enter the discussion.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics. A graphics format designed as the successor to GIF. It
features compression, transparency, and progressive loading, like GIF, but it is
free of patent restrictions. It is not yet supported by current browsers, but it
has been recommended for future support. See the PNG Specification for further
information.

POP

Post Office Protocol. A protocol for client-server e-mail systems. If you are
using software like Eudora or Pegasus or the mail clients in Netscape or MSIE,
your address to collect mail often will begin with pop. For example, Delphi
e-mail accounts use an address of pop.delphi.com to collect mail. See SMTP.

POTS

Acronym for Plain Old Telephone Service.

PPP

Point to Point Protocol. Along with the older SLIP, a protocol that can be used
with a dialup connection to an ISP to complete a TCP/IP Internet connection.

Push

The technology that puts pre-selected content directly on your computer screen from
the Internet without your need to browse for it. With this technology, introduced by
PointCast and Individual, Inc.and being added to 4th generation browsers, you can
program your desktop, for example, to automatically receive such things as local
weather, news headlines, selected stock reports, and sports scores for selected teams
or events.

Q

Queue

mirth in response to another's comment. Often expanded to ROTFLMAO (...Laughing My Aft Off).

RSN

Short for Real Soon Now. It represents an indefinite period of time somewhat longer than
the time "the check is in the mail."

S

Search engine

A utility that will search the Internet, an Intranet, a site, or a database for terms that
you select. Search engines consist of three elements:

•a program that roams the area to be searched, collecting data and links to more data.
These are variously known as spiders, worms, crawlers, or other colorful names. •an index
of the data collected to enable fast access to terms that you search for. •A search
interface--the form in which you enter your search terms and the software behind it that
queries the index, retrieves matches, and organizes the data for follow-on searches.

Each of the major search engines differs in its approach to these three elements.

SLIP

Serial Line Interface Protocol. Along with the newer PPP, a protocol that can be used
with a dialup connection to an ISP to complete a TCP/IP Internet connection.

Smiley face

A happy face or other expression formed with typed characters, usually viewed by tilting
your head to the left. These are used in place of real facial expressions, body language,
and tone of voice when writing. Also known as "emotion.". For more examples, see the
Unofficial Smiley Dictionary.

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The protocol used to send mail between servers and to send
mail from your client to a mail server. Your address to send mail using software like Eudora,
Pegasus, or the mail clients in Netscape and MSIE will often begin with smtp. For Delphi,
the address to send mail through is smtp.delphi.com. See POP.

Spam

Flooding many inappropriate newsgroups or mailing lists or your mailbox with off-topic
articles--usually ads or promotions. It is a major violation of netiquette, and if you
try it, it violates your member agreement in most places and can lead to account
cancellation. The term was inspired by an old Monty Python sketch.

T

TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The protocols that are the basis for
transmitting and routing data packets on the Internet. The Internet Protocol is the one
thing that all current Internet sites have in common.

See History.

that the remote owner has made available, just as if it were your local computer. For more
information and examples, see the Telnet FAQ.

TLA

Three Letter Acronym

Tn3270

TN3270 is a special type of telnet that is sometimes needed to connect to IBM mainframe
sites. Regular telnet will often work, but if you have trouble with keypresses and
commands, you may need a tn3270 client to add to your software.

Traceroute

An Internet utility that will show you the full connection path between your site and
another Internet address. You can run your own traceroute software with a PPP or net
connection or you can use it as a command from Delphi's NavNet textside Utilities menu
and from most shell accounts. Delphi provides a traceroute utility on webside, which will
trace only from Delphi back to your provider, if it isn't Delphi itself. If you are
running a PPP account, NetLab is an excellent freeware program for Win95 that includes
traceroute and other utilities.

Transparent GIF

A type of GIF image where one color, usually the background of the image, has been
selected to appear as transparent. When placed on a web page, any background color or
tiled image will show through the transparency. It is the way to put graphics with
shapes other than the usual rectangles on a page. See GIF.

Trojan horse

program, believing that it has a useful function, it will instead, for example, erase
your hard drive. See virus.

Troll

An outrageous message posted to a newsgroup or mailing list to bait people to answer.
Trolling is a form of harassment that can take over a newsgroup or mailing list. Well
meaning defenders can create chaos by responding to trolls. The best response is to
ignore it.

U

Urban legend

An oft-told tale on the Internet that is untrue, but refuses to die. They keep
reappearing in newsgroups, e-mail discussion lists, and message bases. The stories
themselves are interesting and when newcomers read them for the first time, they are
often passed along as fact. They may have been once true as in the Craig Shergold
get-well card story, a hoax like the GOOD TIMES VIRUS, or a joke, like the expensive
Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe. They often appear with variations, so that get-well
cards become business cards, or Neiman-Marcus becomes Mrs. Fields instead. Read more
about these in our accompanying feature on Urban Legends.

URI

Universal Resource Identifier. A standardized method of identifying and locating
resources which includes Uniform Resource Names (URN) and Uniform Resource Locators
(URL). The system is only partly implemented today, but when fully implemented,
when a URN is requested, it will be systematically matched with a set of URLs for
the resource to find the best available route to the resource.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. URLs specify the location of a resource in the Internet.
You can type or paste a URL into the Location window in your browser and then
connect to it.The URL shows the type of item and its basic address and path.
The major types are http, gopher, ftp, telnet, newsgroups, news articles, and files,
which may be programs, text, graphics, audio, video, etc. See How to Use URLs

URN

Uniform Resource Name. A standardized name for a persistent, location-independent,
resource identifier. As conceived, when the system is implemented, you will be able
to link to a resource by URN without specifying its location. See the May 1977 RFC
2141 URN Syntax

Usenet Newsgroups

Usenet Newsgroups are discussion groups about a topic that is reflected in their
titles, such as comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.adventure or sci.astro.hubble. Many of the
newsgroups have worldwide distribution, and their followers post messages, properly
called "articles", for all to read and respond to. The "Usenet" part of the title
refers to their distribution via the unix to unix network. Strictly speaking,
newsgroups are a Usenet, not an Internet protocol, but they are widely picked up by
Internet providers.

There are eight major primary series of newsgroups: comp, humanities, misc, news,
rec, sci, soc, and talk. Newsgroups in the eight primary series are only created
after a formal approval process, which includes formal discussion and voting. In
addition, there are less formal alternative newsgroups with the alt series the
primary one, and many others with a regional or local focus such as the nyc
series or the uk series or topics with limited distribution and purpose like k12
or fedreg. To participate in newsgroups, you should learn the purpose and the
norms of the newsgroup before posting any articles of your own. A good rule of
thumb is to read for two weeks before posting, and then follow the norms. Many
newsgroups post a FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions file about once a month, which
you should look at before posting for the first time. See the Newsgroup FAQ for
more help.

V

Virtual reality

A computer simulation of a real 3-dimensional world, often supplemented by sound
effects. One early example allowed you to drive through a city, turn at any street
intersection, and see what you would see out of a car window. Another let you learn
a ship's layout by moving throughout all of its decks. Modern games let you fly an
airplane or spaceship in combat or explore a dungeon and kill its monsters.
Educational applications let you learn through experience for many types of
simulated tasks or interact with professors and class members at a distance.
See VRML.

Virus

A destructive program that has the ability to reproduce itself and infect other
programs or disks. Typically a virus will not show itself immediately, but will
add itself to programs and disks to spread itself widely on many computers
before it is triggered into its destructive phase. The best defense is to run
anti-virus software and use it on all new software and disks introduced to your
system. Anti-virus software should be updated monthly. For authoritative current
information on viruses, visit the Dept of Energy's Computer Incident Advisory
Committee (CIAC) web site or the Symantec Anti-Virus Research Center.

There are many hoaxes about viruses making the rounds. If you see warnings about
any of these, they are all hoaxes: TIME BOMB, OCTOBER 1, WIN 95, PENPAL GREETINGS,
DEEYENDA, or FREE MONEY. AOL4FREE is also not a virus, although there is a Trojan
Horse program by that name. For more complete information on virus hoaxes, see
Symantec's Hoax Page.

VRML

Virtual Reality Modelling Language. A graphical system that creates views of
3-dimensional images that change as the viewer's angle and position changes and
light sources change. It can be used to create an environment or world that
appears realistic as you "move" through it. It is widely used for games and for
educational applications. The technology is very young and growing fast. It
requires a fast computer and fast video support with lots of memory to be
effective. For a good starting point to learn about VRML, try Yahoo's VRML
Page.

W

WAIS

Wide Area Information Server (WAIS). An indexing system for documents that indexes
the full text of the documents, and scores searches on the basis of the relevance
of its vocabulary to the search terms.

See History.

WareZ

Software pirated by dOoDz (immature scofflaws).

Whois

An Internet utility that you can use to look up information about an Internet site
in the registry database at Internic or elsewhere. You can enter a name like Delphi,
a domain address like delphi.com, or a full or partial IP address and get information
on the site's name, address, points of contact, etc. The utility can be run with your
own PPP or net account, as a command from Delphi's textside NavNet utilities menu or
most shell accounts, or you can use the Whois web page at InterNIC. There are also
WHOIS servers in Europe (RIPE), Australia, and Japan. Many more WHOIS servers are
maintained for particular organizations. A very complete list of Internet WHOIS
servers is kept at MIT. NetLab is an excellent Win 95 freeware program that includes
whois and other utilities.

World Wide Web (WWW)

The World Wide Web is an Internet protocol that makes use of the HTML, hypertext,
and hypermedia to create pages with links to other pages. WWW pages can include
graphics, audio, and video as well as text. See the WWW FAQ and the Internet
History for more information.

COMPUTER ORIENTED TERMS

The following examples are included to serve as a very brief
introduction to what may be found when reading email and news
groups and when using IRC on the Internet.

In email and news, "smiley faces", rather than words, are used
to express the writer's feelings. Turn your head to the side to
read them.

        :-) Smile :-D Laughing

        :-] Smirk :-( Frown

        ;-) Wink :-X Close-mouthed

        8-) Wide-eyed :-O Open-mouthed

  also

        <jk> Just kidding <g> Grin

                        - - - - - - -
